Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the new $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump, and I have to say, it’s been a wild ride. The coins feature Trump’s presidential portrait on one side and the presidential seal on the other, with a “250” inscription to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary.
The US Mint website was overwhelmed, with visitors being placed in a waiting area for an estimated hour. There was even a limit of two purchases per household until Thursday at 2:00 p.m. I guess that’s one way to create a sense of urgency. The mint also warned that “product availability is not guaranteed,” which is just a nice way of saying, “good luck getting your hands on these coins.”
The coins themselves are pretty interesting. One side features Trump’s portrait with the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “LIBERTY,” while the other side has the presidential seal and the “250” inscription. And, fun fact, the coins are made of a mix of copper, zinc, manganese, and nickel, so they may appear gold, but they’re not actually solid gold.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – how much are these coins going to set me back? Well, a roll of 25 coins costs $61, while a bag of 100 coins sells for $154.50. Not too shabby, if you ask me. And, as an added bonus, some of the coins have a special “July 4th” privy mark, which is just a fancy way of saying they were struck on July 4th.
The mint also noted that part of the extra cost goes toward “organizations and projects that benefit the community,” which is a nice touch. I’m curious to know where the surcharge money for these coins will go, and CNN has reached out to the Treasury Department for more information.
It’s worth noting that there’s a law against displaying the image of a sitting president or living former president on coins, but Congress passed a special law to allow the US Treasury to mint these special $1 coins for America’s 250th anniversary. The law states that no portrait of a living person can be included on the reverse of the coin, but since Trump’s portrait is on the front side, it appears to comply with the law.
The only other time a living president was featured on a coin was in 1926, when Calvin Coolidge was put on a half dollar for the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. So, this is a bit of a historic moment, folks.
