In a move that’s about as surprising as a seasonal DLC announcement, The Blood of Dawnwalker is getting a New Game Plus mode, because of course it is. I mean, who doesn’t love replaying the same game with slightly tweaked mechanics and a false sense of accomplishment? It’s not like we’ve seen this exact same feature in every other RPG released in the past decade. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz confirmed the news during a stream with PlayStation Poland, and I’m sure the crowd went wild with excitement, or at least politely applause, because that’s what you do when a game developer says something utterly predictable.
The Time System Conundrum
The Blood of Dawnwalker’s time system is an interesting beast, limiting players to 30 days and 30 nights to save their family. It’s a clever way to add a sense of urgency to the game, but it also means that players are restricted in how much they can do, and thereby how much they can strengthen Coen, the game’s hero. The introduction of New Game Plus mode throws a wrench into this delicate system, and I’m curious to see how Rebel Wolves will balance the feature to prevent it from becoming a cakewalk. Will they introduce new challenges or modify the existing ones to keep the game exciting? Only time will tell, and by time, I mean the vague confirmation that it’s in the works, with no release date or details in sight.
A New Way to Experience the Game
The addition of New Game Plus mode will undoubtedly change the way players experience The Blood of Dawnwalker. With an already souped-up Coen, the game’s difficulty curve will likely be altered, making it easier for players to take down the vampiric Brencis and uncover some of the harder-to-find story threads. It’s an interesting prospect, and one that could potentially breathe new life into the game. However, it’s also a feature that’s been done to death in the gaming industry, and I’m not sure how much excitement it will generate among players who have already completed the game.
A Commercial Success
The Blood of Dawnwalker has been a commercial success for Rebel Wolves, selling over a million copies since its launch in early September. The game’s success is a testament to the studio’s experience and expertise, and it’s no surprise that they’re already hiring for their next game. In our own review, we praised the game for its ambition and ability to deliver on its promises, saying “The Blood of Dawnwalker is a game that lays its ambitions bare at the beginning, and one-by-one pays off all those ambitions in remarkable ways.” It’s a game that has clearly resonated with players, and the addition of New Game Plus mode will likely only add to its appeal.
The Blood of Dawnwalker is available on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and if you haven’t already, you should totally check it out. Just don’t expect the New Game Plus mode to be a revolutionary feature that will change the gaming landscape forever. It’s just another checkbox on the list of features that every modern RPG needs to have, and I’m sure it will be marketed as such. So, go ahead and replay the game with your overpowered Coen, and enjoy the slightly different experience that it will undoubtedly provide. Just don’t forget to buy the upcoming DLC and season pass, because that’s what gaming is all about these days.
