Vance somehow campaigns in Iowa without really trying apparently

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Vice President JD Vance is out on the trail in Iowa, making a big populist pitch for “Iowa values.” Now, I’m not sure what that means exactly, but I’m guessing it involves a lot of corn and nice people. Anyway, Vance was stumping for the Republican nominee for governor, Zach Lahn, and barely mentioned the Senate candidate, Ashley Hinson. I mean, it’s not like she’s running for a major office or anything. Vance did give her a shoutout, though, saying “A shout out to an amazing public servant — I know she couldn’t be here today, but are we going to elect Ashley Hinson the next United States senator for the great state of Iowa?” Wow, what a ringing endorsement.

It’s worth noting that Hinson wasn’t even at the event, and her campaign said it was because of previously scheduled events. Bless their hearts. I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that Vance’s boss, President Trump, is super unpopular in Iowa right now. Speaking of which, Trump decided to curb tariffs on imported beef, which is a big deal in Iowa. You’d think Hinson would be all over that, but instead, she’s been speaking out against it. Go figure.

Hinson’s campaign released a new ad this week highlighting her efforts to reach across the aisle, which is code for “I don’t want to be associated with Trump.” And honestly, who can blame her? The guy is a bit of a, well, you know. Trump did post a video statement endorsing Hinson, but it’s not like she’s been waving it around like a flag or anything. Maybe she’s just trying to keep a low profile and hope the whole thing blows over.

Vance’s trip to Iowa was part of a bigger swing across the country, where he’s been putting some distance between himself and Trump. He’s been talking about “American food” and cutting regulations for farmers, which is all well and good, but let’s be real, folks, this is all about the midterms. Vance is trying to help the Republicans hold onto their seats, and Hinson is trying to win hers. It’s all very exciting, I’m sure.

Iowa is usually a pretty red state, but this year’s governor’s race is looking competitive, with Democrat Rob Sand running against Lahn. Vance spent a lot of time attacking Sand as “far left” and a “career politician,” which is rich coming from a guy who’s basically a career politician himself. But hey, that’s politics for you.

In the end, it’s all about the midterms, folks. Will the Republicans hold onto their seats? Will Hinson win her Senate race? Will Trump’s unpopularity sink the whole ship? Stay tuned, folks, it’s going to be a wild ride. And who knows, maybe Vance will even come back to Iowa and run for president someday. A guy can dream, right? 🐘
