Trump rejected Iran’s latest proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, calling it “unacceptable,” which doesn’t exactly sound like a glowing review.
On Sunday, Trump told Axios that he expects more talks with Iran to happen this week, which is great, because who doesn’t love a good game of diplomatic ping-pong? The US team, including special envoy Steve Witkoff, Jared Kushner, Vice President JD Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, are leading the talks, so let’s hope they’re all well-caffeinated and ready to negotiate. Trump also took to Truth Social to dispute the idea that he’d “offered” Iran any concessions, saying he “offered them NOTHING!” – which, honestly, sounds like a bit of a strong statement.
According to the president, Iran wants to make a deal, but it’s not the deal he wants to make, which is a pretty fair point. I mean, who wants to settle for something that’s not exactly what they want? It’s like buying a car – you want to get the best deal possible, not just any old deal. The official said that Iran has indicated they’re flexible on nuclear issues, but the timing of the commitments is still up in the air, so we’ll just have to wait and see how that all plays out.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz told CNN’s Jake Tapper that Trump rejected the proposal because he didn’t believe Iran was negotiating in good faith, which, let’s be real, is a pretty reasonable concern. Waltz said that Iran was “asking for everything up front with a promise that they would then talk,” which sounds like a bit of a dodgy deal to me. In conclusion, it’s all a bit of a mess, but hey, at least they’re talking, right?
