Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Republican former Florida congressman Matt Gaetz is out here saying that Democrats want to trans kids, and I’m just over here thinking, “Really, that’s the best you’ve got?” Gaetz responded to a man who said he was voting Democratic for the first time ever by saying, “I hate the war too, but the Democrats want to trans your kids.” I mean, come on, can’t we do better than that? The trans issue seemed to be a big deal in the 2024 election, but a new CNN poll suggests that it’s not going to be as effective this time around.
It seems like the GOP is trying to focus on all these different issues, like transgender policies and immigration, but the thing is, voters just aren’t that concerned about them right now. I mean, don’t get me wrong, these are important issues and all, but when you’ve got people struggling to make ends meet and afford gas, that’s what’s really on their minds. The economy is the big issue here, folks, and it’s not even close. The CNN poll shows that 68% of registered voters say the economy is extremely important to their vote, which is virtually tied with the previous high watermark for that issue.
The GOP is trying to make a big deal out of Hasan Piker, some far-left streamer, but it’s just not penetrating with people who don’t follow politics closely. I mean, I’d never even heard of the guy until I read this article, and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. The New York Times-Siena College poll in Michigan showed that Piker was quite unpopular among likely voters who know him, but 6 in 10 offered no opinion about him, and 54% said they hadn’t even heard of him. That’s just not the kind of thing that’s going to swing an election.
The contrast between the economy and all these other issues is just stark. The economy is the one thing that’s really on people’s minds, and the GOP is just not doing a great job of addressing it. I mean, Trump’s got a 73% disapproval rating on the economy and an 80% disapproval rating on inflation, which is just wow. Democrats have taken a seven-point lead on this issue, which historically favors Republicans. It’s just not looking good for the GOP right now.
In conclusion, it seems like the GOP is trying to make this election about all sorts of things, but at the end of the day, it’s the economy that’s really going to matter. And if they can’t get their act together on that, they’re in trouble. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up, but it seems like the GOP is trying to do just that. Anyway, I’m going to go refill my coffee cup and see if I can make it through the rest of this election season without too much more drama. Bless their hearts, they’re going to need it.
