I just spilled my beer all over my desk because I’m so excited to share this news with you all. Legendary heavy rock drummer Tommy Aldridge has collaborated with the Los Angeles art collective SceneFour to release a new behind-the-scenes video featuring Aldridge discussing “Off The Hook”, the first piece from his “Sonic Visions” debut drum art collection. I mean, who wouldn’t want to watch a video about drumming and art? 🎨🥁

The video offers a closer look at the artwork, captured during his performance of WHITESNAKE’s classic “Still Of The Night”, and can be viewed below. Because, you know, you need to see it to believe it. I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen anything so mesmerizing in my life.

The “Sonic Visions” collection features five original works inspired by Aldridge’s legendary career with Ozzy Osbourne and WHITESNAKE. I’m no art expert, but I’m pretty sure this is going to be a game-changer. I mean, who wouldn’t want to own a piece of art created by a drumming legend?

The Artistic Process

Aldridge explains: “‘Still Of The Night’, it’s a cut tempo song. It’s a slower tune, heavier, you know. The notes are farther apart. So there’s a lot before the note, and there’s a lot after the note, and the space between the notes is conveyed into the still art.” Wow, I had no idea drumming was so… deep.

That space between the notes became a defining element of “Off The Hook”, capturing the dynamics, timing, and physical movement behind Aldridge’s legendary playing and translating it into visual artwork. I’m not even kidding, this is like the most interesting thing I’ve ever heard.

Aldridge previously commented on the artwork while viewing early test shots: “When I was looking at some of the test shots, it was pretty amazing, really striking, and a beautiful thing to see. It was genuinely impressive. You experience the drumming in a way you otherwise wouldn’t.” I’m pretty sure I know what he means, but I’m also pretty sure I don’t.

More Art To Come

The next artwork in the collection is in development, captured during Tommy’s performance of Ozzy Osbourne’s classic “Bark At The Moon”. More details and a release date will be forthcoming. Because, you know, we can’t get enough of this drum-art goodness.

Aldridge is best known for his work with BLACK OAK ARKANSAS, the PAT TRAVERS BAND, Ozzy Osbourne, WHITESNAKE, THIN LIZZY, Ted Nugent, Gary Moore, and Vinnie Moore. Yeah, I knew that. I’m a total metalhead, duh.

He has also connected with a new generation of drummers and music fans through his widely viewed appearances on Drumeo, where his performances, interviews, and educational features continue to showcase his legendary playing style to audiences worldwide. Because, you know, the kids these days need to learn from the masters.

SceneFour has released more than 60 collections and is most notable for the conceptual development and release of “rhythm on canvas” artwork, a process where drummers create abstract work with SceneFour based upon their movement behind the drum kit. Yeah, because that’s a thing now.

To date, rhythm on canvas releases include collaborators Mickey Hart (GRATEFUL DEAD), Bill Ward (BLACK SABBATH), Carl Palmer (EMERSON, LAKE AND PALMER), Chad Smith (RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS), Mike Mangini (DREAM THEATER), Will Calhoun (LIVING COLOUR), Jose Pasillas (INCUBUS), Mario Duplantier (GOJIRA), Dave Lombardo (SLAYER), Chris Adler (LAMB OF GOD), Cindy Blackman Santana (SANTANA), Sheila E., Carmine Appice (VANILLA FUDGE), Rick Allen (DEF LEPPARD), Frank Waddy (PARLIAMENT), Nick Menza (MEGADETH), Steven Adler (GUNS N’ ROSES), Dave Weckl, Terry Bozzio, Matt Sorum (GUNS N’ ROSES, VELVET REVOLVER), Billy Cobham, Roy Ayers, Mikkey Dee (MOTÖRHEAD), Chris Fehn (SLIPKNOT) and Chad Sexton (311). Wow, that’s a lot of names.

SceneFour has expanded the rhythm on canvas format to include legendary guitarists. Utilizing a customized, proprietary glove developed as part of SceneFour’s technology, the process captures the guitarist’s movement on the fretboard to craft visual artwork. Because, you know, guitarists need love too.

To date, collaborations with Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen, Page Hamilton (HELMET), Scott Ian (ANTHRAX), Gus G. (OZZY OSBOURNE), Steve Lukather (TOTO), Steve Morse (DEEP PURPLE) and Frank Gambale have been unveiled. Yeah, it’s like a who’s who of guitar legends.

SceneFour is the Los Angeles-based art collective behind the “rhythm-on-canvas” medium, a process that transforms the physical movement and energy of live musical performance into original visual artwork. Yeah, because that’s not a mouthful.

Using proprietary LED technology and motion capture techniques, SceneFour captures a musician’s movements as they perform, creating abstract imagery that reflects each artist’s unique style, technique, timing, and physical expression. Wow, I think I need a flowchart to understand this.

The result is what SceneFour describes as a unique “musical fingerprint,” a visual representation of the way each musician plays. Yeah, because that’s a thing now.

SceneFour collections are regularly exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and have been showcased in international museums. As of 2024, there are seven coffee-table books chronicling collections released with SceneFour. Yeah, because you need a coffee table book to go with your drum-art.

Through its proprietary technology and creative process, SceneFour has established a distinctive place at the intersection of music and visual art, creating a new way to experience the energy and expression of legendary performers. Wow, I think I need a nap after reading all that.

Anyway, that’s it for now. Go watch the video and buy some art or something. 🎨🥁
