Alright, gamers, gather ’round because Minecraft is apparently still a thing! ๐ After enduring the “Happy Ghast” update (who asked for that? ๐ป) and “Vibrant Visuals” (because apparently, our eyeballs weren’t assaulted enough already), Mojang has graced us with more “news.” Brace yourselves for Minecraft Live, where they unveiled the “highly anticipated” Minecraft: The Copper Age. Yes, you heard that right, folks. Copper. Get ready to mine that shiny brown stuff on September 30th! ๐ ๐
Before the spectacle of Minecraft Live, some “lucky” journalist got to chat with Anna Lundgren, Senior Product Manager for Minecraft (a title so long it probably needs its own chunk in Minecraft). They discussed the groundbreaking Copper Age, the copper golem (a mob so thrilling it almost won a mob vote ๐ณ๏ธ), and the sheer genius behind resurrecting discarded ideas with the “input from fans.” Because, you know, what would Mojang do without the infinite wisdom of the internet? ๐ค
So, Anna, why The Copper Age now? Is this some desperate attempt to make copper relevant?
Anna Lundgren: Well, we added copper way back in 2021 (ancient history, I know ๐ด). Then, we slowly forced more copper stuff into the game, like those utterly essential copper bulbs and “decorative” copper blocks. And since the copper golem almost won that mob vote (but didn’t ๐), we thought, “Hey, why not dedicate an entire ‘game drop’ to it?” It’s all part of our “iterative and creative” process. Translation: We throw ideas at the wall and see what sticks. ๐คทโโ๏ธ
“The Copper Age“? Really? Did you guys just run out of ideas?
Anna Lundgren: We like “delightful” names! “Bundles of Bravery,” “The Garden Awakens” (from its eternal slumber, I guess๐ด), “Spring to Life” (because seasons are a revolutionary concept ๐ท), and “Chase the Skies” (because flying is so last year โ๏ธ). The Copper Age fits because… well, we’re adding a useless golem and a new gear tier that nobody asked for! โ๏ธ
I’ve seen comments saying The Copper Age is only relevant for, like, the first hour of gameplay. Thoughts? ๐ค
Anna Lundgren: “Interesting perspective!” (aka “We completely ignored that feedback” ๐) We try to cater to “different play styles” (aka “We’re throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks”). Whether you’re a newbie or living in your “forever world” (get a life, seriously ๐ ), we have something for you! (Spoiler: It’s copper.)
The new copper armor, tools, and weapons are “useful earlier on” (because they’re worse than iron ๐ชฆ). Copper is “easier to find” now (so we can shove it down your throats), making it a “stepping stone” (to iron, duh ๐). But wait, there’s more! The copper golem and shelf blocks are “useful for different play styles” (if your play style involves hoarding useless items). And let’s not forget the “decorative aspects” (because who needs functionality when you have brown blocks? ๐งฑ). We can’t wait to see what you do with them (besides uninstalling the game ๐).
What can players expect in Minecraft: The Copper Age? Besides disappointment, obviously. ๐
Anna Lundgren: We’re bringing back the copper golem (because we feel guilty about it losing ๐ฅบ) and “expanding on the uses for copper” (by inventing uses for copper โ๏ธ). The golem’s design has been updated (slightly), and it can now help you sort items (badly) using the new copper chest (which is just a chest made of copper ๐งฐ). They also “add life” to your bases (by standing there and oxidizing), and the copper golem statues are “really fun for decoration” (if you’re into that sort of thing ๐ฟ).
Also, copper gear (yay?) will be “useful” (for about five minutes) and “prove useful as players hunt for iron” (which you’ll be doing immediately). Lastly, we’re adding the shelf block (๐), which lets you swap items (slowly) or use them as decoration (because we ran out of ideas ๐ก).
Why bring back the copper golem? Was it because the community wouldn’t shut up about it? ๐ฃ๏ธ
Anna Lundgren: We’re “always listening to player feedback” (unless it’s something we don’t want to hear ๐). Even though the allay won (and is probably forgotten), we knew the copper golem was a “fan-favorite” (among a very vocal minority ๐ฃ). Since we’ve been “gradually expanding” copper (by force), we thought now was the “perfect time” (to appease the masses ๐). It’s not just about “honoring player requests” (it’s about damage control), but also “making sense within the larger Minecraft universe” (which is already nonsensical ๐).
What about the copper golem resonated so well with fans? Was it the promise of mediocrity? ๐ค
Anna Lundgren: Every mob has its fans (even the glow squid ๐ฆ). The copper golem “seemed to especially resonate” (with a very small group) because it’s “cute” (debatable ๐คจ) and had the “potential to add more life” (by standing there like a statue ๐งโโ๏ธ). We updated the functionality to feel “fresh and useful” (it’s still neither), while keeping its “charm” (which is nonexistent ๐ป).
How do you balance nostalgia and fresh ideas? By ignoring both? โ๏ธ
Anna Lundgren: Amazing question! (I’m so glad you asked!) One thing that’s amazing about Minecraft is that we never remove anything (because that would require effort ๐ช). The features that players are nostalgic for are “all still in the game!” (collecting dust in some forgotten corner). However, we “sometimes iterate” (aka “completely change”) on past features, and features “often change” (for the worse) during development.
With the copper golem, we originally envisioned it pressing buttons (randomly). Now, it sorts items (badly). Progress! ๐ Another example is the firefly bush! (Remember that? No? Exactly.) We originally considered adding fireflies (but didn’t). Now, we have a bush! (Because bushes are the future! ๐ฑ) It gives players “more control” (over where they put their bushes), which is “even better than the original feature!” (Says who? ๐คทโโ๏ธ)
Tell us about the redesign of the copper golem. Is it still as useless as before? ๐ค
Anna Lundgren: The copper golem hasn’t changed much visually (it’s still brown and clunky). Although it does oxidize (like your interest in this update ๐) and turn into a statue (fitting). The main change is its functionality (it sorts items now!). I think this is “consistent with the spirit of the copper golem” (which is being utterly pointless) while “making it more useful” (it’s still not).
Anything else implemented because of the players? Or did you just pull ideas out of thin air? ๐จ
Anna Lundgren: I think the shelf block is “really cool” (said no one ever ๐ฅถ) and shows the “creativity” of our designers (questionable). The shelf block is our way of acknowledging player requests (that we ignored for years) – more inventory management (that’s clunky) and different block shapes (that are still blocky ๐งฎ). It has many different looks (depending on the wood), so it’s “perfect for decorators” (who have no taste) and can turn three adjacent shelf blocks into a “full hot bar switcher” (if you have the patience of a saint ๐).
Just for fun, what is your favorite part of Minecraft: The Copper Age? (Besides the end, obviously.) ๐
Anna Lundgren: I love the “helpfulness” of the copper golem (it’s not helpful at all ๐) and all the new copper blocks (they’re all brown ๐ค), but my favorite is probably the new shelf block (it’s a shelf) that allows for “so many fun designs” (if you’re into shelves ๐คฉ) when I build!
Minecraft: The Copper Age drops on September 30th! (Prepare for disappointment.) ๐ฃ
