The Annecy International Animation Film Festival is where all the cool kids go to showcase their latest and greatest animation projects, and this year was no exception 😎. The “Lights, Camera, Aardman!” panel was where the magic happened, as the Wallace and Gromit creators Aardman revealed their secret collaboration with The Pokémon Company to bring us Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu 🤝. Because, you know, the world was just missing a stop-motion Pokémon show 🤷♀️.
The audience was treated to the first footage of the pilot, and let’s just say it was a real treat 🎉. The project is set in the Galar region, because who doesn’t love a good ol’ fashioned British-inspired Pokémon setting 🇬🇧? And, of course, it’s scheduled to be released in 2027, because patience is a virtue, right? ⏰ The first key art was also unveiled, featuring Pichu, Sirfetch’d, and Fletchling, because who doesn’t love a good Pokémon squad 🐾? The Galar region, as you may recall, was the setting for Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, because The Pokémon Company loves to reuse and recycle 📦.
Sirfetch’d, for those who may not know, is the evolved form of Farfetch’d, because who doesn’t love a good Pokémon evolution 🔄? It made its debut in the Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games, because The Pokémon Company loves to make us buy new games to catch ’em all 🤑. The Galar region, as mentioned earlier, was inspired by the United Kingdom, because The Pokémon Company loves to take inspiration from real-life places and make them into Pokémon regions 🗺️. The Pokémon Company noted in their official press release that it was a “fitting setting” for their first collaboration with Aardman, because who doesn’t love a good British-inspired Pokémon region 🇬🇧?
Director of Original Animation at The Pokémon Company International, Phil Rynda, joined Aardman’s Chief Creative Director, Sarah Cox, on stage to share some behind-the-scenes insights on the project, because who doesn’t love a good sneak peek 🤫? They shared the first footage from the pilot and some production materials, because the audience just couldn’t get enough 🤩. The first look at the upcoming project was first shown in a teaser back in July 2025, because The Pokémon Company loves to tease us with new projects 📺.
Rynda said, “It’s an honour to take part in Aardman’s panel at Annecy and talk about the shared commitment to quality, strong storytelling, memorable characters, and a genuine respect for audiences and fans,” because who doesn’t love a good quote 📚? This project gives us a unique opportunity to tell stories from the point of view of Pokémon, made possible by Aardman’s extraordinary craft, remarkable artistry, and warmth and affection for this much-loved Pokémon cast 🐾. Cox added, “Aardman are delighted to bring the vivid physicality of Stop Frame animation into the Pokémon world, because who doesn’t love a good stop-motion animation 🤩?”
The description of the show is just as epic as the title: “an epic journey through the wilds of Galar,” because who doesn’t love a good adventure 🌄? Our heroes, Sirfetch’d and Pichu, embark on a gallant quest to help and protect Pokémon across the region, because who doesn’t love a good hero’s journey 🦸♀️? Their missions rarely go as planned, but their noble deeds forge their friendship as they step bravely into the unknown, because who doesn’t love a good friendship story 🤜🤛? Peril, alliances, and rivalries, extraordinary Pokémon, and endless laughs await them, because who doesn’t love a good comedy 🤣?
If you’re unfamiliar with Aardman’s works, they include Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Timmy Time, and Chicken Run, because who doesn’t love a good British animation studio 🇬🇧? I grew up on Shaun the Sheep and Chicken Run, so I know their stop-motion animation will be perfect for this Pokémon project 🐑. Pokémon Tales: The Misadventures of Sirfetch’d & Pichu is described as “an epic journey through the wilds of Galar,” because who doesn’t love a good adventure 🌄? The show is set to release in 2027, because patience is a virtue, right? ⏰
