Alright, buckle up, buttercups, because HBO’s The Last of Us is apparently a “success.” 🙄 We have Craig Mazin to thank, the showrunner, writer, and producer who, let’s be honest, probably peaked with this one. So, naturally, everyone’s wondering what masterpiece he’ll butcher next. But fear not, gamers, he’s “joked” about adapting GTA 6 or, wait for it… Candy Crush. Genius! 🤣
In an interview with Scifi Now (because who else would interview him?), Mazin declared he’s “never going to” adapt another video game. The Last of Us is his “video game swangsong.” Oh, thank the heavens! 🙏 But, if he *were* to, he’d be “tempted” by GTA 6. Why? Because he’s a “masochist,” and apparently, 19 seasons of TV based on GTA sounds like a good time. Someone get this man a therapist! 🤦♂️
“But then also part of me thinks, ‘Oh, no, don’t do that. Do something else. That’s almost no story at all. Go ahead and try and do Candy Crush…!'” he added. Yes, because a show about matching colorful candies is *exactly* what the world needs. 🍬 Someone give this man an Oscar! (For worst idea ever.)
While Mazin plans to leave us in peace and not ruin any more games, he’s “excited to watch what other people do.” How generous of him! He might even “help” as a producer. Oh joy! 🤩 He’s got “a couple in mind” but won’t name them. Probably for the best, honestly. We can only handle so much secondhand embarrassment. 😬
But when it comes to “writing and dedicating myself on a day-to-day basis,” The Last of Us is his final video game adaptation. Phew! 😌 We can all breathe a collective sigh of relief. Go touch grass, Craig!
Mazin was initially attached to the cinematic travesty that was the Borderlands movie. He later clarified that he was not a credited writer on it. Of course not! 😇 The movie was written by “Joe Crombie,” a person that some people do not believe even exists. A ghost writer for a ghost of a movie. How fitting! 👻
“Hollywood is waking up”
Mazin also said that “Hollywood is waking up” to the idea that games can be “incredible source material” and worth “adapting with respect.” Oh honey, no. 💀 He cited the success of A Minecraft Movie and the Fallout TV shows as evidence. Minecraft? Really? Is that the bar now? 📉
Apparently, the number of Hollywood adaptations of video games is “ramping up.” We’re doomed! 😫 There are “more than 40 video game movies in the works,” along with numerous TV shows. The Twisted Metal TV show returns this July. Yay? 🎉 Mortal Kombat 2 and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 movies are coming later this year. Oh god, why? 😭 In 2026, we’re getting a Street Fighter movie and The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2. Someone, please, make it stop! 🛑
As for The Last of Us, the TV series is coming back for a third season that will focus on Abby’s story. Because we didn’t suffer enough the first time around. 🤡
