Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Former CIA Director John Brennan is suing the Trump administration to preserve records about the investigation into him. I mean, who doesn’t love a good game of “keep the receipts”? Brennan’s lawyers claim that administration officials, including the Acting Attorney General and the FBI Director, have been publicly declaring him a criminal before a full investigation and indictment. That’s like me declaring myself the champion of my fantasy football league before the season even starts.
Brennan’s team is also alleging that certain officials in the Department of Justice are engaging in some shady prosecutorial activity to gin up a case against him. They’re saying that the administration is vindictively trying to prosecute him, which is just a nice way of saying they’re trying to throw the book at him. Bless their hearts.
The lawsuit is asking a federal judge in Washington to order President Donald Trump, White House chief of staff Susie Wiles, acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, and top prosecutors out of Miami to preserve their records about Brennan. They’re also asking the court to order the preservation of records into any broader “grand conspiracy” investigation the Justice Department may pursue. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
In recent weeks, the Southern District of Florida US attorney’s office has been beefing up its prosecutorial team, including bringing in conservative presidential power expert John Yoo to consult on a case that may involve Brennan. I’m no lawyer, but it sounds like they’re getting ready to throw everything but the kitchen sink at him.
Brennan’s attorneys have previously said that a prosecutor told them the former CIA director was a target of investigations out of the prosecutor’s office. Those investigations include a grand jury investigation and an inquiry into whether Brennan lied to Congress about an intelligence report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. Brennan maintains he’s done nothing wrong, but we’ll have to wait and see how this all plays out.
It’s worth noting that CNN has reached out to the Justice Department and White House for comment, but so far, crickets. Maybe they’re just too busy preserving all those records.
In conclusion, this whole saga is like a bad soap opera, with twists and turns at every corner. I’m not sure what’s more entertaining, the actual investigation or the lawyers’ antics. Either way, I’ll be here, sipping my coffee and watching the drama unfold. And who knows, maybe someday we’ll get to the bottom of it all, but until then, it’s just another day in the wild world of politics. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and honestly, it’s just a big mess.
