Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is still considering arresting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu if he visits the city for the United Nations General Assembly in September. I mean, can you imagine the headlines? “Netanyahu Arrested in NYC, Chaos Ensues.” Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now it’s all over CNN. Mamdani made these comments on The New York Times’ “The Interview” podcast, because where else would you make such a statement?
Mamdani’s administration is apparently discussing the potential arrest with their legal department, and he’s not backing down from his campaign promise to pursue this. He even called Netanyahu a “war criminal” who belongs in The Hague. Now, I’m no expert, but I’m pretty sure that’s not exactly a diplomatic thing to say. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. The ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu in 2024, accusing him of war crimes during and after the Hamas attacks on Israel. President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden have both denounced the ICC warrant, because, well, that’s what you do when someone tries to arrest a head of state.
The US hasn’t ratified the Rome Statute, which means we don’t have to arrest people with ICC warrants against them. But Mamdani seems to think he can just go ahead and do it anyway. Bless their hearts. The Trump administration has been battling the ICC for a while now, with Secretary of State Marco Rubio promising to “dismantle” the court. I’m not sure how that’s going to work, but I’m sure it’ll be entertaining to watch.
Mamdani is a fierce critic of the Israeli government and has called Israel’s war in Gaza a “genocide.” Israel, of course, denies those claims. US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz called the mayor’s comments “pure political theater,” which seems like a fair assessment. Netanyahu himself dismissed concerns about Mamdani’s calls for his arrest, because why would you worry about something like that?
Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, said Netanyahu will still come to New York and address the United Nations General Assembly with pride. I’m sure it’ll be a real pride-filled moment, surrounded by people who want to arrest him. This whole thing is just a big mess, folks. In the end, it’s just another day in the world of international politics, where everyone hates each other and nothing ever gets done. And that’s why I’ll be over here, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show.
