Mega Man reboot hijacked by gimmicky dual protagonist nonsense again

It’s been a long time coming, but CAPCOM is finally bringing back the Blue Bomber in a big way. Nearly a decade after the release of Mega Man 11, the company is gearing up to launch Mega Man: Dual Override, a new mainline game that promises to both respect the series’ legacy and carve out its own path. As a jaded gamer who’s seen it all, I have to admit that I’m excited to see what CAPCOM has in store for us. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – after all, we’ve been burned by disappointing sequels and reboots before.

A New Era for Mega Man

At gamescom 2026, I had the chance to get hands-on with Mega Man: Dual Override, and I have to say that my impressions are largely positive. The game boasts a fantastic soundtrack, an art style that grows on you the more you see it in action, and a new “chip” system that promises to accommodate a range of playstyles. But what really sets Dual Override apart is its attempt to balance old and new – it’s clear that the developers are trying to create a game that will appeal to both longtime fans and newcomers.

Behind the Scenes

I also had the chance to sit down with the game’s directors and producers, including Shinya Ikuta, Shingo Izumi, and Hiroyuki Minamitani. When asked about why now was the right time to bring Mega Man back, Ikuta-san explained that the company had been working on various spin-off series and collections, and felt that the 40th anniversary of the series was the perfect opportunity to launch a new mainline game. It’s clear that CAPCOM is committed to making Mega Man a “core IP” alongside other juggernaut franchises like Resident Evil and Street Fighter.

Gameplay and Features

So, what can we expect from Mega Man: Dual Override? For starters, the game features a new “Custom Chip System” that allows players to mix and match different chips to achieve their desired playstyle. The game also promises to be challenging, with a focus on difficulty that’s reminiscent of older Mega Man games. And, of course, there are the “Robot Masters” – including Twinkle Girl, a new character who’s already generating buzz online.

Legacy and Future

As for whether Dual Override is essentially Mega Man 12, the developers are playing coy. But it’s clear that the game is designed to be a celebration of the series’ legacy, with nods to classic characters and gameplay elements. And with a boss character design contest already underway, it’s clear that CAPCOM is committed to engaging with the community and building a loyal fanbase.

As I finished my demo and walked away from the gamescom booth, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and trepidation. Will Mega Man: Dual Override live up to the hype, or will it succumb to the pitfalls of modern gaming trends? Only time will tell, but for now, I’m willing to give CAPCOM the benefit of the doubt. After all, as the great philosopher once said, “you can’t start the next chapter of your life if you keep re-reading the last one” – and it’s time for Mega Man to start a new chapter.
