The song is taken from their upcoming album “Marrow Deep”, which is set to release on August 28 via Loma Vista Recordings. I mean, it’s not like we’ve been waiting for this album or anything… 🙄 The LP marks MASTODON’s first full-length effort without founding guitarist/singer Brent Hinds, who was fired from the band in March 2025 and sadly passed away five months later in a motorcycle accident. The song was inspired by the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene and the personal havoc it wreaked upon MASTODON bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders and his family. I mean, who hasn’t been there, right? 🌪️ The catastrophic storm severely flooded their home and destroyed personal belongings, leading to a nearly two-year period of displacement that coincided with the whole band navigating the profound grief of the passings of founding member Brent Hinds and drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor’s mother Michele Lawrence. Yeah, it’s been a real party for these guys.
The Story Behind “In The Ruins”
The song “In The Ruins” is a powerful declaration of resilience and catharsis, and it’s paired with a vibrant video that depicts a fever dream journey by a single-eyed creature named Frank across flooded and ruined landscapes. Because, you know, that’s exactly what you want to watch after a long day – a single-eyed creature navigating a post-apocalyptic world. 🤪 Hey Beautiful Jerk explained that the initial inspiration for Frank and the concept for “In The Ruins” came to them when they were in the ER for 10 hours with the worst eye infection of their life. Yeah, because that’s not a weird story at all.

The New Era of MASTODON
“Marrow Deep” marks the beginning of an ambitious new era for MASTODON, and it’s their first full-length to feature new guitarist Nick Johnston alongside significant contributions from keyboardist João Nogueira. The album was co-produced by MASTODON at their own West End Sound in Atlanta with Patrik Berger (Lana Del Rey, Charli XCX) and Kurt Ballou (HIGH ON FIRE, CONVERGE), and was mixed by Andrew Scheps (Adele, BLACK SABBATH, METALLICA). Yeah, it’s a real who’s who of music industry big shots.
The album preserves the crushing riffs, adventurous songwriting, and emotional depth that have long defined MASTODON, while a renewed sense of purpose pushes the band toward some of the most compelling music of their career. Because, you know, they weren’t compelling enough already. 🙄 Bill, Brann, and Troy are thrilled that they still have the opportunity to do this, and they’ve got other members who are just over the moon to be in the band with them. MASTODON will celebrate the “Marrow Deep” release with the upcoming “The Poisonous Weapons Tour”, a nationwide run of dates with support from DEAFHEAVEN and ALCEST. Kicking off September 16 in Orlando, the trio of bands will cut their way across the full country before closing out October 24 at Sick New World Dallas.
