Well, folks, humanity has officially peaked. Someone out there in the great wide world decided that what we really needed was a feature-length documentary about Jaws: The Revenge, the 1987 cinematic masterpiece where a shark apparently held a grudge against the Brody family and followed them to the Bahamas. Because sure, why not? We’ve already documented every blade of grass in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and analyzed every frame of Birdemic for hidden meanings—why stop now?
For those blessed souls who’ve managed to avoid this franchise killer (pun absolutely intended), Jaws: The Revenge was the fourth and final entry in the series, directed by Joseph Sargent. It follows Ellen Brody (Lorraine Gary, bless her heart) as she moves to the Bahamas and meets Michael Caine, who famously skipped his Oscar ceremony to film this gem. And yes, another great white shark shows up because apparently these creatures have excellent long-term memory and family vendetta capabilities. Who knew sharks were such grudge-holders?
Now, director Mike Gencarelli is diving deep (see what I did there?) into this cinematic catastrophe with The Shark That Roared, featuring interviews with Lance Guest, Mario Van Peebles, James “Murr” from Impractical Jokers, and Kevin Smith. Because when you’re making a documentary about one of the worst sequels ever made, obviously you need the guy who made Tusk to weigh in. That’s like asking a raccoon for investment advice—it’s questionable judgment all around.
The documentary promises to explore the tropical shoot (translation: actors pretending to be scared in beautiful locations while wondering where their careers went wrong), behind-the-scenes experiences (likely involving copious amounts of alcohol and regret), and the “surprising fanbase” that’s developed over the years. Surprising indeed—it’s like discovering your weird uncle who collects toenail clippings has a thriving online community. Sometimes the internet is a beautiful, terrifying place.
Gencarelli’s team is currently crowdfunding on Kickstarter because apparently making a documentary about a terrible movie about a vengeful shark isn’t something studios are lining up to finance. The nerve! They’re aiming for a summer 2027 release, which gives you plenty of time to reconsider your life choices and decide whether contributing to this project is really the best use of your money. Or you could just buy a real shark and train it to enact revenge on your enemies—it’d probably be more practical.
So mark your calendars, shark enthusiasts and masochistic film buffs! Summer 2027 will bring us The Shark That Roared, a documentary that proves one person’s trash is another person’s treasure, and sometimes that treasure is a 90-minute exploration of why Michael Caine should’ve stayed home and accepted his Oscar instead. Progress! 🐟🎥
