The legendary guitarist and co-founder of DEAD BOYS has left this mortal coil, leaving behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of punk rockers to come. Or, you know, at least make them want to grab their guitars and smash things 🤘.
Cheetah Chrome, whose real name was Eugene Richard O’Connor, was a true original – a one-man hurricane that tore up the musical landscape with his feral guitar riffs and manic energy. His bandmates described him as “a really sweet guy that loved rock-roll,” which is just about the most punk rock thing I’ve ever heard 🎸. DEAD BOYS’ music lives on, and will continue to inspire others for generations to come, or so his bandmates claim. I mean, who needs privacy during a difficult time when you can just ask for it on social media, right? 🙄
The Punk Rock Legacy of Cheetah Chrome
Cheetah Chrome helped architect the sound of punk with the seminal rock band ROCKET FROM THE TOMBS, along with David Thomas and Peter Laughner, who would later form Pere Ubu. Because, you know, every punk rock story starts with a band that nobody’s ever heard of 🙃. Before launching DEAD BOYS with ROCKET drummer Johnny Blitz and frontman Stiv Bators, Cheetah was already making waves in the punk rock scene. And, of course, who could forget their 1977 debut album “Young, Loud And Snotty”, which was an instant classic? I mean, it’s not like every punk rock band has an album with that title or something 🙄.
Cheetah Chrome’s passing has left a gaping hole in the punk rock world, and I’m not just saying that because I need to fill up this article with something 📰. The man was a true original, and his influence can still be heard in punk rock music today. Or, at the very least, his influence can still be heard in the music of bands that are trying to sound like they’re from the 70s 🎸.
Remembering Cheetah Chrome: A Life of Punk Rock and… More Punk Rock
In 2010, Cheetah published his autobiography, “Cheetah Chrome: A Dead Boy’s Tale From The Front Lines Of Punk Rock”, which was well-received by critics and fans alike. Because, you know, every punk rock legend needs a book to cement their status as a punk rock legend 📚. And, of course, who could forget his first-ever solo EP, “Solo”, which was released in 2013? I mean, it’s not like every musician releases a solo EP at some point in their career or something 🙄.
Cheetah Chrome is survived by his wife, Anna O’Connor, and his 14-year-old son Rogan, who will undoubtedly grow up to be a punk rock legend in his own right 🤘. Or, at the very least, he’ll grow up to be a guy who really likes punk rock music 🎸. So let’s all raise a glass (of cheap beer, naturally) to Cheetah Chrome, a true punk rock legend who will never be forgotten 🍺. Or, you know, at least not until the next big punk rock thing comes along and everyone forgets about him 🙃.
