TIFF 2026 Review: Fjord – Because Who Needs Explosions When You Have Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan Staring Deeply Into Each Other’s Eyes for 2 Hours

Fjord cannes 1

The most epic and dramatic tale of a fjord, because who doesn’t love a good story about a body of water? 🌊🎥 I mean, seriously, who needs superheroes or space battles when you have a fjord, right? 🤣 The community at the heart of Cristian Mungiu’s Fjord is so exciting and thrilling, I bet you can barely contain your enthusiasm 🎉. It’s like, a small town where everyone knows each other, but not everyone is friends, wow, what a unique concept 🤔. I’m sure it’s not like every other small town in the world or anything 🙄.

So, the Gheorghiu family, who are super conservative and prayerful, move to Norway from Romania, because, you know, they wanted to experience the thrill of being judged by their neighbors for their values 🙅‍♂️. And, boy, do they get judged! 🤷‍♀️ The townspeople are all like, “Oh, you’re so strict and religious, you must be abusing your kids!” 🤯, while the family is all like, “Uh, no, we just like to pray and spank our kids a lot, it’s a cultural thing” 🙏. It’s like, totally not a cliché or anything 🙄.

The film is soooo similar to The Hunt, but, you know, with a fjord 🌊, and also Anatomy of a Fall, but with more praying 🙏. It’s like, the ultimate courtroom drama, where you get to decide who’s right and who’s wrong, and also question the morality of child abuse, because, you know, that’s not a clear-cut issue or anything 🤔. The film is all like, “Hey, maybe the parents are abusive, maybe they’re not, maybe the kid just fell down and got a bruise, who knows?” 🤷‍♀️, and you’re like, “Uh, yeah, maybe, but also maybe not, and that’s what makes this film so thought-provoking and stuff” 🤓.

The performances by Renate Reinsve and Sebastian Stan are, like, totally subtle and realistic, except for that one scene where Sebastian Stan’s character cries, and it’s like, so emotional and stuff 😭. I mean, who doesn’t love a good cry scene, am I right? 🎥. And, of course, the film is, like, super long and slow at times, but that’s just because it’s trying to be all artsy and thought-provoking, you know? 🤓.

Anyway, Fjord is, like, the most divisive film ever, because some people loved it at Cannes, but others were all like, “Meh, it’s okay, I guess” 🤔. It’s like, the ultimate film for people who love to debate and argue about morals and ethics, and also for people who love fjords, because, let’s be real, who doesn’t love a good fjord? 🌊👏. So, if you’re looking for a film that will make you think and also put you to sleep at times, then Fjord is the film for you! 😴💤. Go watch it, and then come back and argue with me about it, because, you know, that’s what the internet is for 🤖. 🎥👍
