Virtue Gets Smashed by Gaming’s Favorite Sledgehammer

Virtue screenshot 01

Well, it looks like Devolver Digital is at it again, trying to make us feel all the feels with their latest game, Virtue and a Sledgehammer. I mean, who needs a social life when you can spend your days smashing things with a sledgehammer, right? But seriously, this game has piqued my interest, and I’m excited to dive in and see what kind of emotional trauma it can inflict on me.

As I sat down to play the preview build, I couldn’t help but think about the state of the gaming industry. We’ve got games that are trying to be movies, games that are trying to be TV shows, and games that are just trying to be games. And then there’s Virtue and a Sledgehammer, which is trying to be a walking simulator with a sledgehammer. Because, you know, that’s exactly what we needed – more walking simulators. But hey, at least this one has a sledgehammer, so that’s a plus, right?

One of the things that struck me about Virtue and a Sledgehammer is its quietness. I mean, it’s a game about smashing things, but it’s also a game that’s really quiet and introspective. It’s like the developers took all the noise and chaos of modern life and replaced it with a sledgehammer and some robot enemies. And you know what? It’s actually kind of brilliant. The game’s low-poly aesthetic and melancholic synth soundtrack only add to the sense of unease and dread that permeates the game.

The Game’s Inspirations

As I talked to Creative Director and Writer Jordi de Paco and Composer and Level Designer Paula Fingerspit, I got a sense of the game’s inspirations. They mentioned games like Alan Wake 2, Mouthwashing, and Signalis, which is a pretty interesting combination. I mean, who wouldn’t want to play a game that’s inspired by a mix of psychological horror, low-polygraphics, and charismatic visual design? It’s like the developers took all the best parts of those games and mashed them together into a unique and fascinating experience.

The Game’s Soundtrack

One of the things that really stood out to me about Virtue and a Sledgehammer is its soundtrack. The music is designed to reinforce the emotional tone of the game, and it’s incredibly effective. As Fingerspit explained, “the music for our games always tries to reinforce heavily what we want the player to feel. Like, what is this game trying to convey emotionally?” The result is a soundtrack that’s both haunting and beautiful, and it adds a whole new layer of depth to the game.

The Game’s Themes

As I played through the preview build, I got a sense of the game’s themes. It’s a game about feeling like you don’t belong, about being a stranger in a strange land. It’s a game that’s all about exploring the human condition, and it’s a game that’s not afraid to get a little weird and experimental. As de Paco said, “we had this prototype of breaking stuff and fighting robots, which was fun, but we didn’t know what to do with it yet…And we decided, what about if we use this as a metaphor to talk about feeling like you don’t belong anymore to the place you grew up in?”

As I finished playing the preview build, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. Virtue and a Sledgehammer is a game that’s trying to do something new and interesting, and it’s a game that’s not afraid to take risks. And hey, even if it doesn’t quite work, at least it’s trying something different. So, if you’re feeling adventurous and want to try something new, be sure to check out Virtue and a Sledgehammer when it launches in 2026 on PC. And if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can even play the demo on Steam right now. Just don’t say I didn’t warn you – this game is going to smash your emotions into tiny little pieces, and you’re going to love every minute of it.
