Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents mistakenly targeted a US citizen in a Chicago suburb on Sunday, leaving him on the ground with various injuries, according to the Evanston Police Department. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up. The poor guy was just minding his own business, and then suddenly he’s on the ground with ICE agents all over him. Bless their hearts, I guess they thought they had the right guy.
The whole thing started when an unknown caller reported hearing two men arguing and someone saying an individual would be taken into custody. Evanston police officers were dispatched to the scene, and when they arrived, they found one man on the ground with several bystanders helping him. The man reported injuries to his head, neck, and teeth, and the police officers called for an ambulance.
Witnesses told the police that they believed ICE agents were attempting to detain the man. One responding officer located two SUVs near an intersection and spoke with one person who identified himself as a federal agent conducting a “fugitive investigation.” The person was wearing plain clothes and a vest marked “POLICE” with federal law enforcement markings.
It turns out that the ICE agents had targeted the wrong guy. They later determined that the man they had targeted was not the person they were seeking and learned that he was a US citizen. He was released, but not before he suffered some injuries. The Department of Homeland Security told CNN that ICE agents conducting a targeted enforcement operation encountered a person who resembled their target and “immediately identified themselves as law enforcement.”
The DHS spokesperson said that the individual was given lawful commands but was not cooperative and refused to identify himself. ICE officers relied on their training and later left the scene without further incident once the individual finally identified himself. However, surveillance video obtained by CNN appears to show two agents and the man in an upright struggle before federal officials pull him to the ground.
It’s unclear what happens after the man is brought to the ground, as the individuals move out of the camera’s view. Moments later, at least three drivers pull into the nearby parking lot and exit their vehicles, joining other bystanders, some recording. An Evanston officer also noticed blood on the agent’s hands, which the federal official said resulted from an injury he received while trying to detain the man.
The incident is still under investigation, and the Evanston Police Department is preserving available body camera footage and interviewing witnesses. The incident comes a year after the launch of “Operation Midway Blitz,” the federal government’s immigration crackdown in Chicago and surrounding areas.
In conclusion, it seems like the ICE agents made a bit of a mistake here. I mean, targeting a US citizen and leaving him with injuries is not exactly the best way to handle things. The whole situation is a bit of a mess, and I’m sure it will be interesting to see how it all plays out. As I always say, you can’t make this stuff up, and it’s a good thing I had my coffee to wake me up to this crazy story. And on that note, I think I need a refill – this one’s left me shaking my head.
