Meta Spends Big on Muse AI Because Humans are Clearly Overrated

Well, folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Meta is pushing forward with new AI devices and agents, and I’m not sure if I should be impressed or concerned. The company’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, and other executives laid out their vision for AI at the Meta Connect event, introducing a range of new products with their Muse AI agent baked in. This includes lightweight virtual reality glasses, Ray-Ban glasses without cameras, and a tiny puck the size of a keychain for communicating with Meta’s AI helper. It’s like they’re trying to make Muse a part of our daily routines, and I’m not sure if I’m ready for that.

Meta’s not alone in this AI race, though. Other tech giants are developing their own agents and gadgets, and it’s getting harder to keep up. The company’s initial AI glasses, originally released in 2023, have been widely panned for their ability to discreetly record users without their consent. But Meta is still optimistic about the future of AI, with Zuckerberg saying that “people in the industry have a wide range of views about how the future is going to go,” but at Meta, they are “optimists because we believe in people.”

The new glasses Meta introduced are meant to function as a computer and entertainment device in one, and they’re claiming it’s like having “a private cinema, a game console, and a computer” all in one. They’re also expanding the services that work with Muse, adding support for shopping through Walmart, GameStop, Gap, and Wayfair. It’s like they’re trying to make Muse a personal assistant, and I’m not sure if I’m ready to trust a machine with that much control over my life.

But despite the concerns, Meta is betting big on its glasses, claiming they’re lighter and cheaper than the competition. The new audio-only glasses are launching on October 13, and they’re priced at $349, while the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 with cameras is launching immediately, starting at $449. They’re also working on a new device called Muse Charm, a tiny keychain-sized device that can be used to talk to Muse without having to unlock a phone or wear AI glasses.

It’s clear that Meta is all-in on AI, and they’re not letting concerns about privacy and security hold them back. As Zuckerberg said, he expects “billions” of people to use Muse in the years ahead, and I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. I guess only time will tell if Meta’s bet on AI will pay off, but for now, I’m just going to sit back, sip my coffee, and watch the AI revolution unfold. And who knows, maybe one day we’ll all be walking around with Muse-enabled glasses, and I’ll be the only one who still uses a flip phone – now that’s a thought that’s both terrifying and hilarious!
