Chad Gray of Mudvayne Reminisces About Vinnie Paul: A Touching Tale of Friendship (and Drum Lessons?)

So, Radioactive MikeZ, bless his heart (or whatever’s left of it), managed to wrangle MUDVAYNE’s very own Chad Gray onto his 96.7 KCAL-FM show, “Wired In The Empire.” Chad, bless his heart too, decided to wax poetic about his bromance with the late, great Vinnie Paul. Apparently, Vinnie taught Chad everything he knows, which, if you listen to MUDVAYNE, might not be a compliment. He said some stuff about how Vinnie thought Chad’s lyrics weren’t complete garbage and enjoyed the whole screaming-singing thing. Bless. 🙄

Chad went on about how Dimebag and Vinnie were his heroes, practically royalty. They even trained him to be a rock star through those oh-so-classic PANTERA home videos. I guess watching drunk dudes smash stuff is a valid form of education these days. He said Vinnie was humble and approachable, always signing autographs. Which is great, unless you were hoping he’d actually write you a decent song. 🤷‍♂️

Back in the ancient year of March 2024, Chad, in his infinite wisdom, decided to share his thoughts on the PANTERA reunion with Philip Anselmo and Rex Brown. Apparently, Vinnie was super against it because, you know, his brother was dead. I guess that’s a valid reason to not want to relive your glory days. But Chad knows the “true and pure” intentions… whatever those are. He then quoted Vinnie saying, “My brother’s dead,” like that’s some profound philosophical statement. 🤯 Vinnie didn’t need the money, Chad assures us. He was too busy bleeding for HELLYEAH. Which, let’s be honest, is a band name that sounds like a drunk guy trying to say “Hell yeah!” 🤣

Chad, ever the diplomat, understands why fans are excited. He’s so insightful, isn’t he? He said that people like to stand on the floor. Riveting stuff, Chad. Absolutely groundbreaking. 🥇

He hasn’t seen the reformed PANTERA, but he’s seen them 14 times back in the day. He then reminisced about seeing them during the “Cowboys From Hell” era. Ah, the good old days when metal wasn’t as… well, you know. 👴

The PANTERA thing is hard for Chad to process because, surprise, surprise, he was a massive fan. And he gets what standing on that floor means. Because if you’re there, you’re probably “a little long in the tooth.” Gee, thanks, Chad. Way to make the fans feel old. But hey, heavy metal is the fountain of youth, so all those 40 and 50-year-olds can pretend to be 18 again for one night. How… uplifting? 🤡

Elaborating on his struggle to embrace the PANTERA comeback, Chad whined about being best friends with Vinnie and how Vinnie was never behind it. So, it’s hard for Chad. Really hard. Cue the tiny violin.🎻 He wants everyone to respect Vinnie and Dimebag. Because, you know, they were a big part of music. And it’s a “cheat” that they’re not here to be a part of it. Boo-hoo. 😭

Chad clarified that he loves Zakk and thinks Charlie is a tremendous talent. And they’re doing it from a “pure” place. Sure, Chad, sure. Whatever helps you sleep at night. But it’s hard for him because Vinnie was his bro and didn’t have a say. So sad. Maybe he should write a whiny song about it. 🤔

Anyway, MUDVAYNE is doing their “L.D. 50 25th Anniversary” tour. Because nostalgia is the only thing keeping these bands afloat. 🚣‍♀️ STATIC-X is supporting, because who else would? And VENDED is opening because… well, who cares? 🤷

Oh, and they released a new single called “Sticks And Stones.” Groundbreaking. And another one called “Hurt People Hurt People.” So deep. These musical masterpieces were released through Alchemy Recordings. Fancy. ✨

Before these sonic assaults, MUDVAYNE hadn’t released any new material since 2009. Which means the world was spared from their… unique sound for over a decade. Lucky us. 😇
