Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Teaser: Because We Clearly Didn't Have Enough Blurry Flashbacks of Shiny Rocks

Following in its predecessor’s footsteps, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 released a painfully brief teaser today showcasing what could show up in the fourth film—or, more accurately, what we’ll be analyzing like forensic scientists until the actual movie drops in 2027.

It appears Paramount has found its sweet spot when it comes to promoting the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise. It continues to release extremely short teaser trailers that accomplish the remarkable feat of showing almost nothing while somehow still getting everyone excited. This time, the studio confirmed that the next entry in the Blue Blur’s filmography will be titled Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Congratulations to the marketing team for finally solving the “what should we name this thing” puzzle that’s stumped humanity for three whole films.

The brief footage reveals the new title (groundbreaking!), hints about the plot (vague enough to mean literally anything), and the official cast list confirms that franchise favorites are returning. Wow, actors who’ve already been paid to do three films might do a fourth? Stop the presses! The new trailer can be seen below, assuming you have approximately 15 seconds to spare and enjoy watching things spin around slowly.

The chaos emeralds are a big deal in the video game franchise, appearing in every mainline Sonic the Hedgehog title starting with the first game released for the SEGA Genesis in 1991. They started as stage collectibles (with only six: yellow, pink, blue, green, red, and light gray) that allowed fans to unlock the best ending and have become more important with each subsequent launch. Basically, they’re the Infinity Stones of the Sonic universe, except instead of snapping half of existence out of reality, they let you run slightly faster and turn gold.

They’ve now evolved into a major plot point in the video games, often acting as sources of serious power and giving Sonic the ability to become Super Sonic, and the film franchise appears to be following suit. The Chaos Emeralds are heavily featured in the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 teaser, with returning character reflections shown on the surface of the emeralds, alongside the haunting silhouette of Metal Sonic after appearing as a major plot point in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Because nothing says “cinematic storytelling” like staring at some glowing rocks while vague shapes hint at conflicts we’ll need to wait three years to understand.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will have returning favorites and newcomers joining the cast. Jim Carrey is returning as Robotnik, with Ben Schwartz, Kristen Bell, Idris Elba, Keanu Reeves, James Marsden, Tika Sumpter and Ben Kingsley reprising their roles. Wait, Ben Kingsley? When did he join this franchise? Did someone mix up their casting sheets with the Marvel universe? In Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Matt Berry, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, Lee Majdoub, Nick Offerman and Richard Ayoade have been confirmed in currently undisclosed roles. At this point, I’m convinced they’re just calling random celebrities and asking if they want to be “the voice of mushroom” or “background owl #3.”

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 drops into theatres on March 19, 2027. So mark your calendars, set three separate reminders, and prepare to forget everything about this teaser by the time it actually releases. Or just watch the teaser 47,000 more times between now and then—at this rate, you’ll have it memorized better than your own phone number.
