Get ready for the most explosive, potentially disastrous film of the year – Digger, starring the one and only Tom Cruise. Because, why not? It’s not like he’s had a string of iconic roles or anything, from Risky Business to Mission: Impossible. Nope, this time he’s going all out as Digger Rockwell, a billionaire with a bad combover and an even worse plan to save humanity. The trailer is out, and it’s a wild ride, full of frantic energy and what can only be described as a healthy dose of absurdity. And, of course, it’s got the obligatory “Digg. Or die” tagline because who doesn’t love a good digger pun?
The Cast and Crew: A Who’s Who of Talent
Digger boasts an impressive cast, including Oscar winner Riz Ahmed, John Goodman, Oscar nominee Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Oscar nominee Jesse Plemons. And let’s not forget the talented folks behind the camera, like Academy Award-winning filmmaker Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who directed and co-created the story with Sabina Berman. It’s like a big ol’ party, and everyone’s invited – even the production designer, Dennis Gassner, and composer Cosmo Sheldrake. With this kind of talent on board, you’d think the movie would be a guaranteed hit, but we all know how that usually turns out.
The official synopsis reads like a recipe for disaster: “The most powerful man in the world embarks on a frantic mission to prove he is humanity’s saviour before the disaster he’s unleashed destroys everything.” Sounds like your average Tuesday, am I right? And yet, I’m strangely excited to see how this all plays out. Maybe it’s the promise of Cruise’s over-the-top performance or the prospect of watching a billionaire with a bad haircut try to save the world. Whatever it is, I’m here for it.
A Look Back at the Long Road to Digger
Apparently, Cruise had seen Iñárritu’s directorial debut, Amores perros, back in 2000, and the duo began discussing Digger in 2019 while Cruise was filming Top Gun: Maverick. Because, you know, who doesn’t love a good 20-year gestation period for a film idea? The Revenant was Iñárritu’s first English-language film, making Digger his second. And, fun fact, Digger was shot entirely on 35mm film using VistaVision because who needs fancy digital technology when you can go old-school?
The Release: A Global Affair
Digger will be released in theaters and IMAX across North America on October 2, 2026, but will begin screening internationally on September 30. So, mark your calendars, folks, and get ready for what promises to be a wild ride. And who knows, maybe this will be the film that finally proves Tom Cruise is the savior of cinema – or at least, that’s what the marketing team is hoping.
As I finish writing this, I’m reminded of the wise words of the great philosopher, Les Grossman: “First, take a big step back… and literally, FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!” Words to live by, indeed. So, here’s to Digger, the film that promises to be a thrilling, cringeworthy, and possibly disastrous ride – and I, for one, can’t wait to see it. Bring on the combover, Tom – we’re ready for you.
