Jeffries confronted Sanders, warning him against meddling in House primaries, especially ones involving Black Democrats, in such a critical midterm election year. Bless their hearts, it’s like they think Sanders cares about their concerns.
Sanders has been endorsing candidates left and right, and not all of them have been, shall we say, stellar. Take Graham Platner, for example, who was accused of rape and had a history of unsettling behavior towards women. Sanders stood by Platner until the allegations became too much to ignore. You can’t make this stuff up, folks. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now it’s all over the news.
The Democratic party is in a bit of an identity crisis, and Michigan is at the heart of it. Sanders is backing Abdul El-Sayed for Senate, who is running on a platform of “Medicare for All” and has been critical of Israel and the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. The party establishment, on the other hand, is backing Rep. Haley Stevens, a more moderate Democrat. It’s a battle for the soul of the party, and it’s getting ugly.
But wait, it gets better. Sanders is also backing William Lawrence, a democratic socialist who has made some… interesting comments about Black political leaders. Lawrence said they “defang the White left,” which didn’t sit well with, well, anyone. The Congressional Black Caucus is funding ads against him, and even Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is distancing herself from him. It’s a mess, folks.
The thing is, Sanders doesn’t seem to care. He’s convinced that his candidates are the future of the party, and he’s willing to take on the establishment to get them elected. And you know what? It might just work. After all, he has a pretty good track record of getting his candidates elected. But at what cost, folks? The party is divided, and it’s going to be a long and bloody primary season.
