I’m sitting here with my coffee, reading about President Donald Trump giving out cash gifts to his White House aides, and I just can’t help but think, “Well, isn’t that nice of him?” Natalie Harp, along with two other female aides, Chamberlain Harris and Margo Martin, each received $45,000 in cash as a “holiday gift” from the president. I mean, who wouldn’t want a little extra cash for the holidays, right? According to financial disclosure statements, these gifts were reported as a “cash gift for the holidays,” and the White House press office has stated that the president has a “longstanding practice of giving Christmas gifts to people in his orbit.”
As I continue reading, I learn that Harp, Harris, and Martin each make an annual salary of $150,000, which is a pretty decent amount of money if you ask me. But hey, who wouldn’t want a little extra cash on top of that? The White House press office has also stated that the gifts have “nothing to do with any of these individuals’ official government duties” and are therefore “entirely permissible under relevant legal and ethical standards.” Okay, sure, because giving large cash gifts to your employees is totally a normal and not-at-all-suspicious thing to do.
I have to chuckle when I think about the media frenzy surrounding this story. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a big story on our hands. The spotlight has intensified on Harp, a 35-year-old former far-right TV anchor, after Sen. Jon Ossoff mentioned her by name in a now-viral speech attacking Trump. It seems like Harp has been quite dedicated to Trump since joining his staff in 2022, even earning the nickname “human printer” for her frequent typing of the president’s Truth Social posts.
The Washington Post first reported on these cash gifts, and I have to wonder what other interesting stories they might uncover. Walt Nauta, a longtime Trump aide, also received a “gift for holidays” from the president, totaling $20,000. Nauta was once charged in the case involving Trump’s handling of classified documents, but the case was eventually dropped. It’s all just a big web of intrigue, isn’t it?
As I finish my coffee and wrap up this story, I’m left thinking that it’s all just a bit much. The drama, the intrigue, the cash gifts – it’s all just a big show. And we’re all just sitting here, watching it unfold with a mix of amusement and confusion. So, let’s all just take a deep breath and remember that, at the end of the day, it’s just politics as usual.
