Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. Ken Paxton’s Senate bid in Texas is getting a serious boost from some hefty ad spending, and I’m not just talking about your run-of-the-mill commercials. We’re looking at a whopping $166 million worth of ads planned by Republican-aligned groups from the start of September through Election Day. That’s more than they’re spending on competitive Senate campaigns in Michigan and Maine combined. Talk about putting your money where your mouth is.
Now, I know what you’re thinking – is this really necessary? I mean, Texas is a pretty red state, but it seems like the Republicans are leaving no stone unturned in their effort to defeat James Talarico, Paxton’s Democratic rival. According to a new CNN analysis, a single commercial promoting Paxton aired 258 times during “Judge Judy” in September alone. That’s a whole lot of Judge Judy, if you ask me.
The Texas ad spending is striking enough on its own, but when you consider the fact that the Republican Party is facing some historic midterm headwinds, it’s like they’re throwing everything they’ve got at this one. And let’s not forget, Paxton has had his fair share of controversies, including an unsuccessful impeachment led by fellow Texas Republicans over corruption allegations. So, it’s not like he’s the most squeaky-clean candidate out there.
But hey, when you’re in a tight spot, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do, right? The pro-Paxton group Texas PAC spent over $2 million on more than 1,300 advertising spots during college football broadcasts in September. And that’s not all – they also spent about $600,000 on more than 750 “Judge Judy” airings. I mean, I love a good game of football as much as the next guy, but this is just ridiculous.
Now, I know some of you might be thinking, “Big Elephant, this is all just a big waste of money.” But the thing is, it’s not like the Democrats are just sitting back and letting the Republicans have all the fun. Talarico’s campaign has responded with some ads of their own, including one where he says “billionaires are spending millions attacking me” due to his opposition to corporate PAC money, congressional stock trading, and gerrymandering.
So, what’s the bottom line here? Well, it looks like this Senate race in Texas is going to be a real nail-biter. And with all the money being thrown around, it’s like a game of political bingo – who’s going to come out on top? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be a wild ride. And as I always say, you can’t make this stuff up – the drama, the intrigue, the “Judge Judy” ads. It’s all just a big circus, folks, and I’m here for it.
