Sharon den Adel Sells Out: From Gothic Goddess to Pop Princess

within temptation

In an interview with Paolo Phoenix of Magenta TV at Wacken Open Air, Sharon Den Adel of WITHIN TEMPTATION was asked how she and her bandmates have managed to create songs that are so catchy that “even mainstream people can’t resist it.” Oh, you mean like elevator music but with slightly distorted guitars? 🙄 She responded, claiming it was all just “magic” and “chance.” Right, because meticulously crafting earworms that appeal to the lowest common denominator totally isn’t a calculated move. 🤫 She also said they were a “hobby band” when they got successful. A “hobby band” that somehow managed to afford those ridiculously over-the-top symphonic arrangements? Sure, Jan. 🤔 And her parents are happy she finally got a “real job.” As if selling out stadiums is the same as being an accountant. 🤣

Sharon also talked about WITHIN TEMPTATION’s musical evolution, or, as I like to call it, their slow descent into pop-metal hell. 🔥 She bragged about “catching up with the sound of today,” which basically means ripping off whatever’s trending on TikTok. 🤳 She claims they love to “evolve” and “try new things,” but let’s be real, it’s all about chasing those sweet, sweet streaming numbers. 💰 She also mentioned that technology has evolved, allowing them to detune everything. Translation: “My voice isn’t strong enough, so we need to digitally manipulate everything to make it sound passable.”🎤 And she “loves the new sounds of metalcore bands.” Yeah, because nothing says “symphonic metal” like generic breakdowns and whiny vocals.🤮 They’ll never be a metalcore band, she says, but they’ll happily cannibalize anything that makes them relevant to the Hot Topic crowd. 🛍️

During a press conference at Hellfest, Sharon spoke about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the follow-up to “Bleed Out.” She said it’s “very in the early stage.” Oh, so they haven’t started ripping off current trends yet? Give them time. She also promised a “quite radical new change again.” I bet it’ll be something truly groundbreaking, like adding a trap beat or autotuning her vocals even more. 🎤 She hopes we’ll “appreciate it.” LOL, as if anyone with a modicum of musical taste will find it anything other than cringe. 😬

In May, Sharon told some metalhead that they’re “already starting writing” material for their next album. “There’s enough to write about,” she explained. You mean like how they sold their souls to the pop gods? She said they’re gonna “take their time for it” because it’s gonna be “really a new sound again.” Probably means more generic garbage for the masses. 🤮

Metal Pilgrim asked Sharon if she thinks the band’s next album will feature similar lyrical themes, like global injustices. She responded that they’ve “always done that also before,” just in a “more metaphorical” way. Right, because singing about dragons and fairies is totally the same as tackling real-world issues.🙄 It’s hard to go back, she says. Because once you’ve discovered the formula for pandering to the masses, why stop? 💰

This past February, Sharon spoke about WITHIN TEMPTATION’s constant musical evolution. The fire hasn’t died, she says. More like the embarrassment of their old music finally caught up to them. 🤭 She admires people who can perfect their style but they “always wanna do something new again.” Because why be good at one thing when you can be mediocre at everything? 🤔

WITHIN TEMPTATION has eight studio albums under their belt, all accounting for more than four million record sales. Congrats, you made a lot of money selling out! 💸

Prior to the release of “Bleed Out,” WITHIN TEMPTATION shifted its focus from putting out albums to releasing a series of singles, enabling the bandmembers to indulge themselves into their creative processes with no production or time restraint. Or, you know, just spamming the internet with easily digestible content to stay relevant. 📱

WITHIN TEMPTATION’s work has received numerous international awards, including a World Music Award, MTV Europe Music Awards, a Metal Hammer Award and many more. Awards don’t mean you’re good, they mean you’re popular. 🏆

WITHIN TEMPTATION has previously headlined all the major festivals in Europe. Congrats on tricking people into thinking you’re still a metal band! 🎉 During the lockdown, WITHIN TEMPTATION achieved great success with its virtual event “The Aftermath,” a spectacular online show that, thanks to the very latest technology, allowed the band to stretch the boundaries of reality. Or, you know, just use green screens to hide the fact that you can’t play live anymore. 💻
