Troy Sanders, the band’s singer/bassist, spoke about the making of “Marrow Deep” and said: “We’re excited for this thing to come out. It’s been maybe five years since our last record, ‘Hushed And Grim’.” Yeah, no kidding, Troy. We’ve been waiting for what feels like an eternity 🕰️. He continued: “We spent a year working on the demo portions of this, and then another year really honing in, the writing and recording.” Wow, that’s a whole lot of time to perfect those sick riffs 🤘.
The Writing Process: A Never-Ending Odyssey
So, the songwriting process for “Marrow Deep” was a long and arduous journey, kind of like watching paint dry, but less exciting 🎨. Troy said: “Our guitar player, Bill Kelliher, he brings a Pro Tools rig on the road with us, and he is constantly writing.” That’s cute, Bill. You’re like the band’s own personal riff factory 🏭. The band started demoing songs in 2024, during their North American tour with LAMB OF GOD, because what’s a tour without a little songwriting on the side? 🚌.
After demoing 32 skeletons of songs, the band narrowed it down to the best ones, because who needs that many songs, anyway? 🙅♂️. They started recording the album in September 2025, and it’s been nearly a year since they began, which is, like, a really long time 🕒. Troy said: “The writing was kind of hit or miss. It was constant for the past couple of years, because someone’s always collecting riffs, lyrical ideas, et cetera.” Yeah, because that’s exactly what we want to hear – that the writing process was a thrilling rollercoaster of emotions 🎠.
Mythology and Music: A Match Made in Heaven
The album’s theme is inspired by the Three Fates of Greek mythology, because what’s more metal than ancient Greek mythology? 🏯. Troy said: “Our drummer Brann Dailor had the idea to get into some mythology on this record and have the three fates be the overlying theme, if you will.” Wow, Brann, you’re a genius 🤓. The album’s music is, of course, expansive, adventurous, and emotionally resonant, because that’s what MASTODON does best 🎸.
Troy said: “To me, it makes perfect sense, and it’s genius the way that Brann kind of put those pieces together.” Yeah, because it’s not like they had a team of highly paid songwriters or anything 🤑. The band’s new keyboard player, João Nogueira, is all over the new record, because who doesn’t love a good keyboard solo? 🎹. And their new guitar player, Nick Johnston, had a lot to contribute to the album, because he’s basically the new Brent Hinds 🤔.
MASTODON will celebrate the “Marrow Deep” release with the upcoming “The Poisonous Weapons Tour”, because what’s a new album without a tour? 🎟️. The tour will feature support from DEAFHEAVEN and ALCEST, because those bands are, like, totally not boring 💤. The tour kicks off on September 16 in Orlando and will end on October 24 at Sick New World Dallas, because who doesn’t love a good metal festival? 🤘.
