Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and reading about the latest update on the accused National Guard shooter, Rahmanullah Lakanwal, and I’ve got to say, this is quite the story. Lakanwal, who’s been accused of shooting two National Guard members, killing one, in Washington, DC, back in 2025, has been admitted to a city hospital after he refused to eat and sometimes drink in jail as he awaits trial. I mean, you can’t make this stuff up, right? A guy who’s facing nine charges, including first-degree murder, and he’s on a hunger strike? Bless their hearts.
I’m reading that during an emergency hearing, DC federal Judge Amit Mehta said Lakanwal’s “health has deteriorated quite substantially.” No kidding, judge. When you refuse to eat and drink, that tends to happen. Mehta also said that Lakanwal’s health circumstances are “in some sense self-inflicted.” You think? I mean, I’m no doctor, but I’m pretty sure that not eating and drinking can lead to some health problems.
According to prosecutors, Lakanwal was admitted to George Washington University Hospital at midnight, and they say they were advised by the US Marshal Service of general health issues the defendant faced two weeks ago. I’m not sure what’s more surprising, the fact that Lakanwal’s health has deteriorated so quickly or that the US Marshal Service waited two weeks to notify the prosecutors. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying and decided to make it a breaking news story.
During the emergency hearing, Mehta said he would allow prosecutors to see Lakanwal’s medical records from the past 24 hours. Those records, prosecutors said, have been under seal and will help guide them on what the next steps should be. I’m not sure what’s in those records, but I’m sure it’s not good. Lakanwal, who pleaded not guilty to the nine charges against him, including first-degree murder, back in February, is in a tough spot.
Lakanwal, who worked with the CIA for over a decade in Afghanistan before the US military withdrew from the country, came to the US in 2021. I’m not sure what his story is, but it’s clear that he’s had a pretty rough time. The Justice Department has said it plans to seek the death penalty against him, which is no surprise given the severity of the charges.
In conclusion, this is a pretty wild story, folks. A guy accused of shooting two National Guard members, killing one, is now in the hospital after refusing to eat and drink. The Justice Department is seeking the death penalty, and Lakanwal’s health is deteriorating rapidly. As I finish my coffee, I’ve got to say, this is a story that’s going to be interesting to follow. And who knows, maybe Lakanwal will start eating and drinking again, but until then, it’s going to be a long and difficult road ahead for him. 🙄
