The White House has decided to bar CNN from flying on Air Force One on Saturday, and I’m just sitting here sipping my coffee, thinking, “Well, this is interesting.” The news outlet was supposed to be part of the White House TV press pool, which is a small group of journalists that cover the president in areas where space is limited and share the information they gather with other TV networks. But, it looks like CNN won’t be joining the president on his trip to Tennessee for a college football game.
I mean, this move isn’t entirely surprising, given the Trump administration’s history with CNN. Last week, President Donald Trump announced that he was banning CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House. And, just a few days ago, a judge blocked the administration from enforcing the ban, ordering them to restore the credentials of the affected reporters. But, it seems like the White House is still trying to limit CNN’s access.
The White House TV press pool is a big deal, folks. It’s the primary way that people around the world watch the president’s speeches and appearances. And, without CNN, the pool can’t function properly. As Jacqui Heinrich, the president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, said on “Fox News Sunday,” “That’s the system that allows the networks to share video of the president with the whole country. If they aren’t there, the pool can’t function.”
I have to admit, it’s a bit concerning that the White House is trying to limit the press’s access like this. I mean, we need independent coverage of the president and the government. It’s what makes America, America. As Weijia Jiang of CBS said, “That’s what makes America America. That’s why we need independent coverage, and that’s why this press pool system has been set up for so long and why it works – because you need independent actors to be able to be the observers.”
The Trump White House also produces its own content, including live streams of events. But, as Jiang put it, “if the government is only showing you what it wants, then you have to question, what are we missing? And that’s what the pool, that’s what these outlets bring to the table.” It’s a good point, and it’s why this whole situation is so important.
