New Movies to Stream This Week
If you’re in the mood for something truly disturbing, Backrooms might be the movie for you. Directed by 20-something year old Kane Parsons, the film takes its cue from Parsons’ YouTube horror series about a labyrinthine alternate dimension. The movie follows a depressed furniture-store owner (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) who discovers a portal to the Backrooms in his basement. Because what’s a horror movie without a creepy basement, right? You can catch Backrooms on HBO Max starting on 9/25.
On the other hand, if you’re in the mood for something a bit more… explosive, Unabomber might be the way to go. Starring Jacob Tremblay as the young Ted Kaczynski, the film examines Kaczynski’s years in academia and his transformation into the infamous Unabomber. Russell Crowe also stars in the film, which follows the FBI Agent (played by Shailene Woodley) who hunted down the terrorist. It’s a thrilling tale of cat and mouse, and you can watch it on Netflix starting on 9/25.
Comedies to Look Out For
If horror and thrillers aren’t your thing, don’t worry, there are plenty of comedies to choose from. The Broken Lizard comedy troupe is back with Super Troopers 3, which promises to be just as wacky and hilarious as the first two installments. This time around, the Troopers are caught between questionable police work and complete mayhem when Farva’s wildly over-the-top Indian engagement to Thorny’s sister spirals into chaos. You can catch Super Troopers 3 on Prime Video, Apple TV, and Fandango.
Another comedy to look out for is Spa Weekend, starring an all-star cast of funny women, including Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann, Michelle Buteau, and Anna Faris. The movie follows a group of longtime friends who reunite at a spa getaway, and sounds like it’s going to be a hilarious collision course with wackiness.
