Amazon MGM Studios, in a move that absolutely NO ONE saw coming (🙄), has announced that they’re rebooting Stargate. Yes, AGAIN. Prepare for a new original series that will either be the best thing since sliced bread 🍞 or another dumpster fire 🔥 that we’ll all pretend doesn’t exist. It’s going to be streamed exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide because apparently, everyone needs more streaming content in their lives. 🌎
Originally launched with the 1994 feature film (remember when movies were watched in *theaters*?), the Stargate franchise has been milked for over three decades to include multiple hit television series (some of which were actually good, let’s be honest), fan-favorite characters (who will inevitably be recast and ruined 😭), and a “passionate global audience” (aka people on Reddit who argue about canon). Its blend of adventurous exploration (of extremely cheap-looking sets), mythology (ripped off from various cultures), and grounded scientific concepts (that make zero sense if you think about them for more than five seconds 🤯) has made Stargate one of the most enduring brands in genre entertainment. Or, you know, just a brand that refuses to die.
“Twenty years ago, my first real job in television was as a Story Editor on Stargate: Atlantis. I spent five years at the franchise working across all three series, Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” said Martin Gero, creator, and executive producer. So basically, his entire career is riding on this. No pressure, dude. “I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you.” Translation: “Please watch my show so I don’t get fired.” “And for those that are new to our world — I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.” Or extraordinarily mediocre. 🤷♂️ Don’t set your expectations too high, folks.
“Stargate is an enduring, iconic franchise that has captivated audiences for decades with its bold exploration of humanity’s place in the cosmos,” said Nick Pepper, Head of US SVOD TV Development, Amazon MGM Studios. Because nothing says “bold exploration” like rehashing the same plotlines over and over. “In partnership with our extraordinary creative team of Martin, Tory, and Joby, we’re honoured to open this next gate to bring a visionary new chapter of this beloved franchise to our global Prime Video audience, one that honours the series’ rich legacy while propelling it into an ambitious and emotionally resonant future.” AKA: We’re going to try to make it woke while simultaneously appealing to the original fanbase. Good luck with that! 🤡
The series is written and executive produced by Martin Gero (Blindspot, Keep Breathing), who will serve as showrunner. Executive producers also include Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell for Safehouse Pictures (Obi-Wan Kenobi, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters); Dean Devlin (Stargate, Independence Day); and Roland Emmerich (Stargate, Moonfall). Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders within the Stargate universe, will serve as consulting producers. So basically, the whole gang’s back together! Let’s hope they learned from their mistakes… but probably not. 🤣
