Cyndi Lauper is back, because apparently retirement is just a suggestion, and she’s celebrating 40 years of her iconic album True Colors with a deluxe edition that’s packed with previously unreleased tracks and live performances. The original album, released on September 15, 1986, was a massive commercial success, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and selling over 7 million copies worldwide. And because you can never have too much of a good thing, Lauper has decided to revisit this classic album and give fans a little extra something to get excited about.
The deluxe digital edition includes two previously unreleased bonus tracks, “The River Cried” and Lauper’s version of “Across The Universe”. And, because the music industry loves to cash in on nostalgia, the 2LP edition will be available on December 4 in a limited-edition rainbow-sprinkle variant, featuring “The River Cried” and select performances from Lauper’s Live at Le Zenith Paris show in 1987. Because who doesn’t love a little bit of sparkle with their music?

Lauper has spoken about the 40th anniversary of the album, saying, “I’m grateful to the fans for embracing the range on the True Colors album – from True Colors to Boy Blue to Change Of Heart and my What’s Going On cover. Yea, I took some risks. I wanted to grow. I was always hoping to become a great artist. To be remembered as someone who tried to push the boundaries a little.” And push the boundaries she did, with an album that has stood the test of time and remains a beloved classic to this day.
The 40th anniversary of the album has given Lauper the opportunity to go back and finish “The River Cried”, a song that was left off the original album in 1986. She’s also found the mastered version of “Across The Universe” that she recorded with Lennie Petze. And, because one can never have too much Cyndi Lauper, she’s included a slew of live performances from her 1987 show in Paris. It’s a treasure trove of Cyndi goodness, and fans are sure to be delighted.
Music Historians Are Preparing Fresh Shelves for the Box Set
The tracklisting for the 2LP edition is a veritable feast of Cyndi Lauper goodness, with the original album tracks, plus the aforementioned live performances and previously unreleased tracks. And, for the digital enthusiasts, the deluxe digital edition includes all the tracks from the 2LP edition, plus a few extra live performances to keep you dancing.
