IDW Games, those masterminds behind such *totally* unforgettable classics like… uh… well, they’re releasing a Godzilla Tabletop Roleplaying Game! π Prepare to be underwhelmed next March with a Kickstarter campaign for Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game.
Apparently, they dug up three Warhammer gaming “legends” β Jervis Johnson, Mark A. Latham, and Gav Thorpe β for their first *ever* co-created tabletop game. I’m sure it’ll be groundbreaking… NOT. π€£ It’s Godzilla! You get to pretend you’re fighting monsters… with character sheets! Collaboration! And *playing cards* instead of dice! ππ² I guess they’re trying to be “unique.” Fans can sign up for more spam, I mean, “information” on IDW Games here. Good luck with that. π€·ββοΈ
βWhen IDW first approached me about working on a role-playing game system, I was cautious until I found out that the game would be based on their fantastic Godzilla comics β at which point I immediately said βYes please, count me in!β Godzilla: The Roleplaying Game is the first time Iβve had a chance to help design a fully-fledged RPG, and doing so with Gav and Mark and the IDW creative team has been a fantastic experience. I am really pleased with the way that the game system has come together, especially the way that using cards instead of dice has allowed us to include a number of novel game mechanics in the game system,β shares co-creator Jervis Johnson (Warhammer). βIβve had a soft-spot for Godzilla ever since I was about eight years old and my mum took me to see Son of Godzilla. I liked it so much I made her stay at the cinema so I could watch the film a second time! As you can imagine, this means that getting to work on the Godzilla roleplaying game is a childhood dream come true for me.β π€ Hmm, a childhood dream, huh? Sounds like someone peaked early. And he watched “Son of Godzilla” *twice*? No accounting for taste, I guess. π¬π€£
βWorking on a Godzilla RPG is something of a dream come true β and the fact that I get to team up with Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe again feels like getting the band back Together!β says co-creator Mark A. Latham (Warhammer, The Walking Dead, Harry Potter). βItβs really exciting to have total freedom in developing a new system: something that really fits with the G-Force era of Godzilla stories, and truly encourages immersive storytelling and character-driven narrative. I think players and DMs alike are going to be very surprised by this game.β Oh, “the band back together”? π More like the “washed-up has-beens reunion tour.” And “total freedom” is never a good sign. It usually means nobody had any good ideas, so they just threw everything at the wall and hoped something would stick. Prepare for disappointment, folks! π€‘
βAs a fan of RPGs over four decades itβs a privilege to work on a setting as iconic as Godzilla β one of the most recognisable characters worldwide! Itβs been a great experience working with Jervis and Mark to bring to life our ideas for the IDW roleplaying system, and the Godzilla game,β says co-creator Gav Thorpe (Warhammer, Inquisitor). βItβs not often that, as a designer, one gets the opportunity to build something completely from the ground up. Itβs our intent to make something foundational that adds to the canon of game systems but more importantly is fun, intuitive and rewards player teamwork.β Four decades of RPGs? Sounds like someone needs a new hobby. Like, I don’t know, maybe competitive bird watching? π¦π€£ “Fun, intuitive, and rewards player teamwork”? That’s what *every* RPG says. I’ll believe it when I see it. π
The Godzilla RPG Kickstarter campaign will be a 30-day pledge launching early 2026, and will feature limited edition tiers with expected fulfilment by autumn 2026. Translation: “Give us your money now, and maybe, just *maybe*, you’ll get something a year later. And it’ll probably be overpriced.” πΈπ€‘
IDW Games will host Playtests at PAX Unplugged (November 21-23, 2025) in Philadelphia. Players who participate will receive exclusive player previews and merchandise. IDW Games will also have a selection of the Godzilla RPG merchandise exclusively available at PAX, including Beanies, Playmats, Notebooks, Pins, Koozies, Playing Cards, Totes, and more. So, basically, if you want to waste your time and get some cheap swag, head to PAX. π Otherwise, maybe just watch a Godzilla movie and save yourself the trouble. π€·ββοΈ
