Oh, joy! 🎉 Another Gremlins sequel is supposedly on the horizon because, let’s be honest, Hollywood is just brimming with original ideas. 🙄 Zach Galligan, bless his heart, dropped this bombshell 💣 at Comic Con Manchester, because where else would you announce such earth-shattering news?
Apparently, Warner Bros., in their infinite wisdom, is super desperate for another Gremlins movie. But, and this is a big but(t) 🍑, it all hinges on whether Steven Spielberg, the overlord of our childhood dreams (and nightmares), deems the script worthy. So, basically, we’re at the mercy of Spielberg’s whims. Great. 👍
Galligan, ever the optimist, wants us to “thank the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” for this potential cinematic masterpiece. Because, you know, one nostalgia-fueled sequel obviously paves the way for another. Makes perfect sense! 🧠 NOT!
Let’s not forget that Galligan played Billy Peltzer in the original Gremlins and its *ahem* “cult” sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Cult, as in, only a few people actually liked it. 😜 Both were directed by Joe Dante, who probably regrets every life choice that led him there. 🤷♂️
And if the movies weren’t enough, there’s a whole slew of Gremlins video games and an animated prequel series set in the roaring ’20s, because why not milk the franchise dry? 🐄 Season 1 of Secrets of the Mogwai premiered on HBO Max in May 2024, and a second season, The Wild Batch, followed in October 2024. Galligan even lent his voice to the cartoon, because he clearly has nothing better to do. 🎤 A third season? Who cares! 🤣
Back in the prehistoric era of April 2015, some Warner Bros. executive confirmed they were “developing new entries in the Gremlins” franchise alongside Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Because apparently, corporate synergy is more important than originality. 🤝 Spielberg, of course, executive produced everything Gremlins-related, because he’s contractually obligated to. ✍️
So, about this third live-action Gremlins film… it’s been “in development” since the early 2010s, which in Hollywood time, is basically an eternity. There were whispers of a reboot, because Hollywood loves reboots more than oxygen. 💨 But fear not! Galligan himself confirmed in 2015 that it would be a sequel, not a reboot. So, slightly less terrible news. 🤏
In 2016, Galligan shared that Chris Columbus, the writer of the original, was “aggressively working on a Gremlins 3.” Aggressively? Sounds like he was forced at gunpoint. 🔫 In a 2017 interview, Columbus claimed he was “really proud of the script” and teased a “twisted” future for the franchise. Twisted, as in, will probably ruin your childhood. 🧸
Columbus’ script apparently explores the profound ethical dilemma of whether Gizmo should be eliminated, because the gremlins are his fault. Deep stuff, people. 🤯 He also promised “minimal CGI” and lots of practical effects, because puppets are totally not terrifying. 🤡
In conclusion, get ready for another Gremlins movie that will probably make you question all your life choices. You have been warned! ⚠️
