In a groundbreaking revelation that will surely send shockwaves through the metal community (or maybe just a mild tremor), former SEPULTURA (the band that peaked in the 90s, let’s be honest) and current SOULFLY (still going, somehow) frontman Max Cavalera has graced us with his profound wisdom on the music industry. Brace yourselves, folks, because what he has to say is truly mind-blowing.🚨
In a recent interview with Chaoszine (a YouTube channel I’m sure you’ve all subscribed to), Max, our guru of groove, lamented the fact that music sales in the streaming era have, like, totally bummed out the chances of new bands surviving. “It’s tough, man,” he whined (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET, the only news source that truly matters). “It’s tough.” Yeah, we get it, Max. Being a rock star is hard when you can’t rely on selling millions of CDs anymore. 🙄 Back in the day, SOULFLY’s first album went gold in America (because apparently, Americans had no taste in music back then). “Roots” and “Primitive” also went gold, which meant Max could afford more gold teeth and probably a solid gold Soulfly pendant. 💰 But those days are gone, baby! Now you gotta use social media, tour, sell shirts (mostly XL sizes, I presume), and be creative. And by “creative,” Max probably means coming up with new ways to recycle the same riffs he’s been playing for 30 years. 🎸
“I think for a young band starting out right now, it’s very difficult,” Max continued, stating the obvious for those of us who haven’t been living under a rock (or inside Max’s dreadlocks). “Much harder [than it used to be].” No kidding, Sherlock! It’s almost like the internet changed everything! 🤯 “They created this monster and they don’t know how to fix it,” Max said, referring to the shadowy cabal of record executives and tech overlords who are apparently conspiring to destroy metal. “And it sucks that the musicians end up paying the price for it.” Poor musicians! Won’t somebody think of the musicians?! 😭
But fear not, dear fans, because Max is still making albums! (Because what else is he gonna do?) “And there’s fans that love vinyl — they love the physical copy.” Yeah, because nothing says “metal” like carefully placing a delicate vinyl record on a turntable and gently lowering the needle. 🤘 And there’s still a passion for this music, and Max loves that. “And that’s why I will continue making records, because I believe in the album, I believe in the power of a record. I believe in the power of an album. It’s a magical thing. It’s a cool thing. It’s an amazing thing.” Okay, Max, we get it. You like albums. Calm down. 🧘
SOULFLY’s thirteenth album, “Chama” (which, according to Google Translate, means “flame” in Portuguese), was released on October 24 via Nuclear Blast Records (because who else would sign them?). 🔥 It’s probably full of the same tribal rhythms, downtuned guitars, and vaguely political lyrics we’ve come to expect from SOULFLY. But hey, at least it’s not nu-metal. 🤷
SOULFLY recently embarked on the “Favela Dystopia” 2025 West Coast tour with GO AHEAD AND DIE (another one of Max’s side projects). ✈️ The tour started on November 1 in Roswell (because aliens love metal too) and will conclude in Flagstaff on November 23. So if you’re in the area and have nothing better to do, go check it out. Just don’t expect them to play any Sepultura classics. 🙅
