Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man #1 - Because Nothing Says "Fresh Take" Like 1970s Nostalgia

Skybound Entertainment and Image Comics, in partnership with Universal Products & Experiences, today announced Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man, a new four-issue limited comic book series from the superstar team of writer Joshua Williamson (G.I. JOE, Superman) and artist Leomacs (Basketful of Heads, Rogues). Howling through moonlit nights, The Wolf Man returns in a new series arriving in comic book shops in June 2026.

Translation: “We’re rebooting something old, making it moody, and charging you $4.99 for it. Again.”

“As a big fan of the 1941 The Wolf Man film from Universal Pictures and the Universal Monsters comics line with Skybound, I knew I had to do this book,” said Joshua Williamson. “It’s very different from my usual superhero work. Easily the most tragic. It’s a dramatic, emotional, and heartbreaking comic about family and generation trauma. All key pieces of a horror story. Oh, and bloody and violent. It earns the Blood of the Wolf Man title in more ways than one. And of course, I had to bring along my Rogues partner in crime Leomacs. His art captures the pain of The Wolf Man and the world he’s living in. This is not going to be what you expect…”

Translation: “I’m using bigger words than usual, and there’s going to be blood. Lots of blood. Because blood sells. Also, I’m contractually obligated to say this is ‘different’ and ‘unexpected,’ but it’s actually the same werewolf story you’ve read a dozen times.”

“Universal Monsters films have always captured my imagination, as there’s so much humanity in these characters. They are all incredibly iconic because they are both tragically human and terrifying like a wild nightmare at the same time,” added Leomacs. “The Wolf Man has also always been a favorite of mine, so it’s a dream to draw this amazing character in a brand-new story and setting, penned by the amazing Joshua Williamson. Together we explore the Wolf Man’s bloodlust and the inevitable consequences.”

Translation: “I get to draw a shirtless man covered in hair and blood for four issues. This is literally my dream job. Also, ‘amazing’ is a placeholder word for when I can’t think of anything more specific to say about Josh’s script.”

Adam Jaeger thought he could become someone new at college… but not like this. One moment he was partying, the next he’s recovering from a massacre that left almost no survivors. The worst part? He might be responsible…

As the monster within tries to claw loose, Adam will do anything he can to stop from becoming…THE WOLF MAN.

Translation: “It’s American Werewolf in College. But darker. Edgier. 1970s-er. You know, like every other ‘reimagined’ horror property in the last decade.”

“It’s amazing to see Joshua Williamson and Leomacs reunite to present this reimagining of the iconic The Wolf Man story. Josh is firing on all cylinders, adding to The Wolf Man mythos with wonderfully tragic and emotional storytelling, and Leomacs perfectly brings this 1970s world to life with his tense and visceral storytelling,” said Diegs Lopez, Senior Editor at Skybound. “Coming off the thrilling conclusion of Phantom of the Opera in May, we’re excited to now bring Universal Monsters stories to readers every month.”

Translation: “I’m contractually obligated to use the words ‘amazing,’ ‘wonderfully tragic,’ and ‘firing on all cylinders.’ Also, ‘every month’ means we’re milking this cash cow until it’s a skeleton. Speaking of skeletons, did I mention there’s blood?”

This collaboration between Skybound and Universal Products & Experiences is the latest milestone in a nearly decade-long relationship that encompasses film, video games, and now comic book publishing. Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man is the seventh Universal Monsters series launch, following James Tynion IV and Martin Simmonds’ Dracula (which netted Simmonds a BEST PAINTER/MULTIMEDIA ARTIST (INTERIOR ART) Eisner Award nomination), Ram V, Dan Watters, and Matthew Roberts’ Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!, Michael Walsh’s Frankenstein, Faith Erin Hick’s The Mummy, James Tynion IV and DANI’s The Invisible Man, and the brand-new addition to the line, the already critically acclaimed Universal Monsters: Phantom of the Opera from Tyler Boss and Martin Simmonds.

Translation: “We’ve made seven of these now. SEVEN. At this point, we’re just spinning a wheel of Universal Monsters and picking random comic book teams to work on them. Next up: The Bride of Frankenstein written by your aunt’s neighbor’s dog walker!”

Blood of the Wolf Man will be followed by additional new Universal Monsters limited series pairing the biggest names in comics with pop culture’s most iconic monsters in the bestselling modern line of horror comics.

Translation: “We have a checklist, and we’re going to burn through it until we hit rock bottom or run out of ‘biggest names.’ Whichever comes first.”

Universal Monsters: Blood of the Wolf Man #1 (of 4) (Lunar Codes Coming Soon | SRP: $4.99, unless otherwise noted) will be available at comic book shops and digital platforms including Amazon Kindle, Apple Books, and Google Play on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.

Translation: “Please preorder. Our sales projections are already looking shaky, and we need those numbers to justify the next reboot. Also, if you buy all 10 variant covers, you’re our favorite type of customer.”
