Trump Kicks Out News Outlets He Doesn't Like Apparently

Folks, I almost spilled my coffee reading this one. President Donald Trump is claiming he’s “banning” CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from the White House, effective immediately. Because, you know, that’s exactly how you handle a press corps you don’t like – just ban them. I’m sure that’s exactly what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they wrote the First Amendment.

I mean, come on, the president says he’s banning these news organizations because they’re “fake news.” That’s rich, coming from a guy who’s been known to stretch the truth a time or two. And what’s with the sudden urge to ban them now? Is it because they’ve been asking too many tough questions? Bless their hearts, they’re just trying to do their jobs.

It’s worth noting that CNN reporters are still sitting pretty in their White House workspace, and a CNN team is even traveling with Vice President JD Vance as we speak. So, it seems like this “ban” might be more of a symbolic gesture than an actual policy change. You can’t make this stuff up, folks.

The folks at CNN are standing by their reporting, saying they have a right to do their job without interference from the government. And, of course, they’re right. The First Amendment is pretty clear on this point. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, I’m sure.

Trump took to Truth Social to announce the “ban,” because that’s exactly the kind of thing you want to do on a social media platform – make sweeping declarations that may or may not be enforceable. He said the media outlets are “constantly writing or reporting FICTION and LIES” when they cover him or his administration. I’m no lawyer, but I’m pretty sure that’s not how you prove libel.

The White House Press Office is referring questions about the ban back to the president’s remarks in the Oval Office, which is just a fancy way of saying they have no idea what’s going on either. Trump said he’d ban the news organizations because they’re “fake news,” and that he doesn’t have to let them into the “people’s house” if he doesn’t want to. Okay, sure, because that’s exactly how this works.

He also hinted that more news organizations might be joining the banned list, because why not? It’s not like this is a slippery slope or anything. The president did say that maybe these outlets can “get better,” which is just a nice way of saying he wants them to start writing more positive stories about him.

The whole thing is just a big mess, and I’m not sure what’s more surprising – the fact that Trump thinks he can just ban news organizations from the White House or the fact that he thinks this will actually achieve anything. Press freedom advocates are already speaking out against the move, saying it’s unconstitutional and amounts to viewpoint discrimination.

Bruce D. Brown, president of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, said the ban would be “flatly unconstitutional” and would be struck down by the courts if challenged. I think he’s right, but hey, what do I know? I’m just a guy with a cup of coffee and a CNN subscription.

In the end, this whole thing is just a big show, and I’m not sure what’s more entertaining – watching Trump try to ban news organizations or watching the news organizations try to cover it. Either way, it’s been a wild ride, and I’m just here for the popcorn. So, let’s all just take a deep breath and remember that the First Amendment is still a thing, and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. And if you’ll excuse me, I need to refill my coffee cup – this show is far from over.
