The most epic film of the year is coming, and it’s not a Marvel movie 🤯! Writer/director Alexis Alexiou’s third feature, SEA OF GLASS, is set to World Premiere at the Edinburgh International Film Festival on Sunday 16 August, and we can’t wait to see what all the fuss is about 🎉. A country noir road movie, SEA OF GLASS follows two women in an off-season Greek seaside resort who unexpectedly come together to confront the past, family stereotypes, and the closed provincial community. Because, you know, that’s exactly what you want to do on your vacation – deal with all the drama and trauma 🤪.
The film stars Evangelia Adreadaki and Christiana Matelska Toka in her debut feature role, alongside Michalis Iatropoulos, Nikos Georgakis, Thanos Tokakis, and Dimitris Tzoumakis. And let’s be real, with a cast like that, it’s going to be a wild ride 🎢. Co-written by Afroditi Nikolaidou and Alexis Alexiou, SEA OF GLASS is inspired by films like Thelma & Louise and The Postman Always Rings Twice, so you know it’s going to be a thrilling and poignant story 📚.
The film’s setting, a unique and environmentally diverse region in Greece, is also a character in itself 🌄. The cinematography by Simos Sarketzis GSC is haunting and evocative, reflecting the oppression and violence the characters suffer 📸. And with a title like SEA OF GLASS, you know it’s going to be a real emocional rollercoaster 🎠. As director Alexis Alexiou explains, “What connects the two women is domestic violence and oppression. But they are also linked by a common goal: the need to break free and find themselves” 🌟.
But don’t just take our word for it 🤔. Writer Afroditi Nikolaidou comments on the film’s setting: “The ‘swamp’, as the character of Vicky likes to call it, is the prison in which she was born and grew up and which she dreams of escaping one day. It is the quicksand in which all the characters are stuck, figuratively and literally, watching their lives sink away” 🌪️. So, if you’re looking for a film that will make you laugh, cry, and possibly question all your life choices 🤷♀️, then SEA OF GLASS is the movie for you 🎥.
And if you’re wondering about the filmmaker’s credentials 🤔, Alexis Alexiou has an impressive track record 📈. His first feature, Tale 52, played in competition at Rotterdam and won the Best Screenplay Award at Sitges 🏆. His second film, Wednesday 04:45, screened in competition at Tribeca and won nine awards from the Hellenic Film Academy, including Best Film and Best Director 🎉. So, you know you’re in good hands 🙌.
SEA OF GLASS is a co-production between Greece, Bulgaria, and Cyprus, and has been picked up by Greek powerhouse boutique distributor Weird Wave 🌊. With a theatrical release scheduled for Greece and Cyprus this fall, you’ll have plenty of time to prepare yourself for the emotional whirlwind that is SEA OF GLASS 🌪️. So mark your calendars for the EIFF screenings: Wednesday 12 August at 14:00 at Filmhouse 1, Sunday 16 August at 20:15 at Cineworld Screen 2 (World Premiere), and Monday 17 August at 15:30 at Filmhouse 2 📅. Don’t miss out on this epic film event 🎉! 🎊 🍿
