It’s like kindergarten all over again.
Trump was asked about James’ decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers and whether he thought James was a better player than NBA legend Michael Jordan. Because, you know, that’s the most pressing issue facing our nation right now. I’m sure the economy, healthcare, and national security can wait while we debate who’s the better basketball player.
The President said, “Well, Michael Jordan’s a guy that’s a friend of mine,” which, I guess, makes him an expert on all things basketball. I mean, who needs actual knowledge when you’ve got a famous friend, right? Trump then went on to say that LeBron might be a racist, but maybe he just doesn’t like Trump. Oh, wow, what a shocking revelation. I bet LeBron is just devastated that Trump doesn’t like him.
The remarks represented the latest salvo in a long-running war of words between the President and James, who earlier announced he would return for a record 24th year in the NBA rather than retire. I guess when you’re a superstar, you can just keep going and going, kind of like the Energizer Bunny, but with more tattoos.
James endorsed Hillary Clinton in her 2016 run against Trump, writing at the time that “we need a president who brings us together and keeps us unified.” After Trump won that election, the two clashed more directly over the President’s decision to rescind a White House invite to the Golden State Warriors following their championship win. Because, you know, that’s exactly what the President should be focusing on – who gets to come to the White House for a photo op.
In September 2017, James posted on social media, “U bum,” which, let’s be real, is just a super mature and not-at-all-childish thing to say. Trump lashed out at James the next year, writing that an interview James had done with then-CNN correspondent Don Lemon had “made Lebron look smart, which isn’t easy to do.” Oh, burn. I bet James was just devastated by that witty remark.
Since then, Trump has occasionally targeted James while playing up his admiration for Jordan, who he said Friday had played golf with him and was “a really good guy.” Because, you know, golf is the ultimate test of character. If you can hit a little ball into a hole, you must be a great person. James went on to endorse Joe Biden in 2020 and then back Kamala Harris in her unsuccessful run against Trump in 2024.
In a post ahead of the 2024 election, James said, “When I think about my kids and my family and how they will grow up, the choice is clear to me,” which, I guess, is just code for “I don’t like Trump.” James is just one of the pro athletes whom Trump has criticized since first running for office a decade ago – a list that at points also included NBA stars Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. Because, you know, what’s a presidency without a few Twitter feuds with famous athletes?
In conclusion, the Trump-LeBron drama continues, because, of course, it does. It’s like a never-ending soap opera, but with more ego and less talent. I’m just waiting for the day when Trump tweets about me, because, let’s be real, that’s the ultimate badge of honor. Until then, I’ll just be over here, sipping my coffee and enjoying the show.
