Folks, I’m sipping my coffee and trying to make sense of the latest news from the White House. It seems they’ve launched another taxpayer-funded television ad, and this one features President Donald Trump walking down a hall while audio plays of him saying “this is the final battle.” I mean, I’ve seen some dramatic stuff in my time, but this is quite something. The ad also includes Trump saying “We will cast out the communist, Marxists, and fascists. We will throw off the sick political class that hates our country. We will rout the fake news media, and we will liberate America from these villains once and for all.” Yeah, because that’s exactly what I want to hear over my morning coffee – a call to arms against communists and fascists.
The Trump administration has been drawing attention for its airing of ads featuring the president just over a month before the November midterms. And I can see why – it’s not every day you see the White House comparing its ads to public service announcements about Medicare and Covid-19 vaccination. The White House says its new commercials “are very clearly not campaign ads,” but I’m not convinced. I mean, come on, who tries to sell patriotism as a public service announcement?
The latest ad appears to be nearly identical to a video Trump posted on Truth Social in January 2024, during his third presidential campaign. The only difference is that the Truth Social video has an additional six seconds that includes Trump’s campaign logo and a number to text. You can’t make this stuff up, right? The White House-funded ad, on the other hand, ends with “Paid for by the US Government” plastered across the screen. Because, you know, transparency is key.
This is the third government-funded ad to be captured by the media tracker AdImpact, and it’s starting to look like a trend. Another ad that began airing on Wednesday featured rapidly edited pictures and video of Trump over audio of him denouncing communism and socialism. And then there’s the ad featuring video of Trump at Mount Rushmore, where he says, “Never before has any nation celebrated so magnificent a triumph as this one.” I’m starting to think the White House has a thing for dramatic scenery.
The White House declined to elaborate on how the first ad was being funded, but defended it as part of “public service announcements” to promote national pride. A White House spokesperson said in a statement, “The ad is educational and unapologetically patriotic. We should be proud of our country.” Bless their hearts, I guess they really believe that. But not everyone is convinced – the government watchdog group Common Cause suggested it could violate rules against using taxpayer dollars for “propaganda.”
Carol Evans, the vice president for policy at Common Cause, told CNN, “I don’t think you have to be a legal scholar and wonder why the president has to use taxpayer funds to promote his image” this close to an election. And I have to agree – it does seem a bit fishy. Somewhere in Atlanta, a producer thought this sounded terrifying, and now we’ve got a full-blown drama unfolding on our TV screens.
In conclusion, the White House has launched another taxpayer-funded ad, and it’s got everyone talking. The ad features Trump saying some pretty dramatic things, and the White House is defending it as a public service announcement. But not everyone is buying it, and it’s starting to look like a trend. As I finish my coffee, I’m left wondering what’s next – will we see more ads featuring Trump in dramatic poses, denouncing communism and socialism? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure – it’s going to be an interesting few weeks leading up to the midterms. And who knows, maybe we’ll even get to see some more of Trump’s campaign logo on our TV screens – because that’s exactly what I want to see with my morning coffee.
