Breaking news: The Amazon rainforest might not be the last one after all, because Amazon MGM is remaking FernGully: The Last Rainforest! I mean, who needs original ideas when you can just dig up an old classic and “reimagine” it for a new generation? 🌳🎥
I guess the folks at Amazon MGM were like, “You know what would be a great idea? If we took a movie about fairies, magical creatures, and talking bats, and made it ‘live action’!” 🧚♀️🦇 Because, you know, nothing says “live action” like a bunch of CGI fairies and talking animals. I’m guessing they’ll still have some special effects involved, but hey, who needs subtlety when you can just go all out and make it a full-on fantasy extravaganza? 🎉
The new film will be directed by Marielle Heller, who’s known for her totally-not-fantasy-related films like The Diary of a Teenage Girl, Can You Ever Forgive Me?, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood. I mean, it’s not like she’s a fish out of water or anything, directing a movie about fairies and magical creatures. 🐟 And according to the press release, she also wrote the script, because who needs a team of writers when you’ve got one person who’s clearly a genius? 🙄
The original FernGully was all about the fairies who lived in an Australian rainforest and their quest to save their home from loggers. You know, the usual: fairies, magic, environmentalism… it’s not like we’ve seen that before in, say, Avatar or anything. 🙃 And who could forget the iconic voice role of Robin Williams as a bat? 🦇 I mean, it’s not like he’s a beloved comedian who’s been in a million other movies or anything. 🤣
Although the original film wasn’t a massive box-office hit, it did perform well with kids on home video, because what kid doesn’t love a good fairy tale about saving the rainforest? 🌟 And in later years, it was often compared to James Cameron’s Avatar, which is just a total coincidence and not at all a rip-off. 🙅♂️
The producer, Jon Sheinberg, said in a press release, “Our goal isn’t simply to make a new film, it’s to honor a timeless classic and extend its powerful themes and musical legacy across every platform.” 🙏 Yeah, because what the world really needs is another remake of a classic film, and definitely not, say, original ideas or new stories. 🙄 And by “every platform,” I’m assuming he means they’ll be making FernGully-themed video games, merchandise, and possibly even a theme park ride. 🎠
In related news, the Amazon rainforest is still on fire, but hey, at least we’ll have a new FernGully movie to distract us from the impending doom of the environment. 🌪️ And if you’re feeling nostalgic for the original film, you can always check out the best movies to show kids to get them hooked on movies, because what’s more important than brainwashing your kids into loving movies? 🤣👀
