Johnny Depp is back, because of course he is. The man has more lives than a cat has lives, and apparently, he’s been waiting for the perfect moment to strike again. Depp will be starring in not one, but two major Hollywood films in the near future. First up, he’ll be appearing in Paramount’s Ebenezer, a new take on the classic holiday tale A Christmas Carol, which is set to hit theaters in November. And if that’s not enough, he’ll also be seen in Day Drinker, a thriller directed by Marc Webb, where he’ll be sporting a long hair, beard, and an unplaceable accent opposite Madelyn Cline and Penélope Cruz.
The first trailer for Day Drinker has just debuted online, and I’ll be honest with you, I have no idea what’s going on here. Depp’s character is a mystery, and his accent is even more puzzling. Is this a horror film? A crime drama? A horror crime drama film? Is Johnny Depp a werewolf or something? A vampire? A were-vampire? Unclear! Watch the trailer below and see if you can figure it out.
The Plot Thickens
According to the official synopsis, Day Drinker follows a private-yacht bartender (Madelyn Cline) who encounters a mysterious, onboard guest (Johnny Depp). They soon find themselves entangled with a criminal figure (Penélope Cruz) and connected in ways no one saw coming. Because, you know, that’s exactly what we need more of in Hollywood – complicated, interconnected storylines that make our heads spin. Somewhere, a whiteboard contains the words “bigger,” “darker,” and “multiverse,” and I’m pretty sure it’s not a coincidence.
For Depp, these productions mark his first major Hollywood movies since the second Fantastic Beasts film, The Crimes of Grindelwald, in 2018. For Webb, the movie marks his follow-up to his live-action remake of Disney’s Snow White, which wound up as a critical and commercial flop. Because, you know, what could possibly go wrong with remaking a classic fairy tale? I’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that the original is a timeless masterpiece that can’t be improved upon.
The State of Hollywood
As we welcome Johnny Depp back to the big screen, it’s hard not to think about the state of Hollywood today. It’s a world where nostalgia is currency, and studios are more interested in reviving old franchises than taking risks on new ideas. The Content Mines remain fully operational, churning out remake after remake, sequel after sequel, and reboot after reboot. And we’re expected to be excited about it. Somewhere, a Focus Group earned another bonus for telling executives exactly what they wanted to hear.
Day Drinker is currently scheduled to open in theaters on March 26, 2027. Because, you know, the world was just missing a thriller starring Johnny Depp with a questionable accent. I’m sure it’ll be a huge success, and we’ll all be talking about it for years to come. Or, you know, it might just get lost in the sea of other movies that are all trying to be the next big thing. Either way, it’s just another day in Hollywood, where the Merchandising Department reportedly approved the decision before the writers did, and executives are still searching for fresh ideas inside movies released between 1982 and 2008. Because that’s what it’s all about – making money, not making art.
